About us
The Royal Australian Navy is a modern military organisation operating advanced vessels and aircraft with personnel expertly trained to defend Australia and its interests, and perform a variety of maritime duties. The Navy also engages in a variety of peacetime activities such as search & rescue and humanitarian assistance. In accurately representing Australia's multi-cultural society, Navy men and women are drawn from a diverse range of social and ethnic backgrounds. From engineering to medicine, and public relations to chaplaincy, the Navy offers many fulfilling positions. Depending on their role, Navy officers and sailors can be posted to any one of 16 naval bases and command offices across Australia, home to more than 18,000 sailors and officers, though much of their time will be spent serving at sea. The Navy is equipped with a formidable fleet of ships and helicopters, featuring sophisticated technology that supports a variety of strategic needs. The Royal Australian Navy was the first of the Australian Defence services to be founded more than a century ago, born of the ships and resources of the separate colonial navies.

A message from Australian Fleet Commander RADM Chris Smith, AM, CSM, RA and Commander Warrant Officer, Fleet Command, Brad Lahey. 2024 has been a transformational year for the fleet. #AusNavy has been out at sea with an average of 20 ships and 2,000 people a day, all year. We’ve increased our lethality with the successful test firing of new weapons systems including Naval Strike Missile, Standard Missile-6, and the Tomahawk Cruise Missile. For those of you at sea thank you for your ongoing service, get home soon, and have a good break after the holiday period with your family.

A message from Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, AO, RAN to #OurPeople and their families. From my family to yours; Have a safe and happy holiday period.

#AusNavy is focused, ready and more lethal 🚀 #HMASBrisbane has successfully fired a Tomahawk missile at a land-based target during a test and evaluation activity off the coast of the US. The Tomahawk missile is a cutting-edge capability with incredible precision, and an extended range of up to 2,500km. Watch the Minister for Defence Industry and Capability Delivery, the Hon Pat Conroy MP, and #OurNavy leaders talk about the significance of this new missile defence capability.

#AusNavy just got more lethal 🚀 #HMASBrisbane has successfully fired a Tomahawk missile at a land-based target during a test and evaluation activity off the coast of the US. The Tomahawk missile is a cutting-edge capability with incredible precision, and an extended range of up to 2,500km. With the successful firings of Naval Strike Missile and Standard Missile-6 also under our belt, Tomahawk is #OurNavy's third successful firing of a new missile defence capability in less than 6 months. BZ to crews of #HMASBrisbane and #HMASSydney, our industry partners, and the US Navy.

Alongside United States Ambassador to Australia, Ambassador Caroline Kennedy, Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Mark Hammond AO, RAN, was honoured to acknowledge the role #AusNavy played in discovering the wreck of US Navy USS Edsall, a warship that holds a special place in our shared naval histories. The USS Edsall served valiantly during World War II, most notably in the early Pacific campaigns protecting Australia alongside #AusNavy warships, and played a role in sinking the Japanese submarine I-124 off Darwin. We honour the brave sailors of USS Edsall and their families. Lest We Forget.

Yesterday Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla conducted a review of the Royal Australian Navy Fleet on Sydney Harbour. This historic event featured His Majesty’s Australian Ships Hobart, Warramunga, Arunta, Gascoyne and Yarra with a Fleet Air Arm fly-past. #OurPeople from ships alongside, and bases in Sydney, Nowra and Canberra proudly represented #AusNavy on behalf of our nation. The Fleet Review was a brilliant display of #YourADF, congratulations to all sailors, soldiers and aviators involved.
