  • Why is fraud a challenging problem?   According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, there are tens of thousands of instances of reported fraud and corruption against the Commonwealth each year. However, because fraud is often a hidden crime, we know this is only the tip of the iceberg.   Those who look to defraud us are capable and committed – they continually develop new ways to beat the controls we put in place to counter them. They embrace new technologies for their own dishonest purposes. According to the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), generative AI will almost certainly be adopted by more criminals over time to increase the scale and sophistication of frauds.   Fraud affects all of us in some way – and we all play a role in identifying and reporting fraud.   To learn more about fraud and how to counter it, visit: counterfraud.gov.au

  • We’re seeking feedback on the draft National Plan to End the Abuse and Mistreatment of Older People 2024-2034 (National Plan). Public consultation is now open and is running until 17 February 2025. We know the abuse and mistreatment of older people – whether it be physical, psychological, sexual, financial or another form of mistreatment or neglect – has devastating consequences for older Australians, their families and communities. The draft National Plan is a joint initiative developed with state and territory Attorneys-General and has an ambitious vision focused on addressing ageism, promoting the rights of older people and ending abuse and mistreatment. The Australian public is encouraged to provide their views by participating in the online survey, making a submission, or joining a roundtable discussion. More information on how to participate is available on our website: https://lnkd.in/gk5YvTbq If you experience, witness or suspect elder abuse, you can call the National Elder Abuse phone line 1800ELDERHelp (1800 353 374) for free and confidential information, support and referrals. You can also visit Compass.info for further information and resources.
