  • Meet Molly Scott, a lawyer in our Dispute Resolution team in Melbourne. Read about her practice below. ❔What areas do you specialise in? I work on a broad range of matters, including regulatory investigations, royal commissions, trusts and estates disputes, shareholder disputes, class actions and contractual disputes. Since joining ABL, I’ve developed a keen interest in trust and estate disputes. ABL’s expertise in this area is unrivalled, so we are often challenged with complex private structure cases that seem intractable at first instance. ❔Tell us about some standout matters you've been involved in. I’m extremely proud to have worked with Giant Steps, a school which supports children and families affected by autism, and one of ABL’s many pro bono clients. We offered support in relation to the expansion of the school, a renovation which involved highly complex planning law aspects and negotiations with various stakeholders. Another matter that demonstrates the complex, engaging and newsworthy work that ABL’s Dispute Resolution and Litigation team does, has been representing Milklab manufacturer, Noumi Limited, in a long-running class action commenced by Deloitte in the Supreme Court which has recently reached an agreement to settle. ❔What drew you to ABL? I joined ABL as a law graduate in 2020 as I knew it would provide me with the best opportunity to gain hands-on experience and intimate exposure to complex legal work. At ABL, every team member, regardless of level, plays an integral role. From early on in my career, I felt I was really able to contribute. I am not just observing – I am actively involved in the strategy and management of matters. From day one, my contributions have been valued by the partners in the team, who have encouraged a collaborative culture of sharing ideas on strategy and legal issues. This environment has allowed me to develop the confidence and skills that I needed to progress in my career and enjoy the work I do. ❔Can you tell us about the ABL Pride initiative? I am one of the Chairs of the ABL Pride Committee, an initiative I am deeply proud of. ABL encourages everyone to bring their whole selves to work and ABL Pride is dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all members of the LGBTIQA+ community and their allies. Since I’ve been at ABL, I’ve been involved in organising a range of initiatives, including LGBTIQA+ training and education and a range of fantastic events. The event I’m most proud of was an inter-firm mixer held on IDAHOBIT. The event was thoughtfully curated by the team to provide entertainment which represented the voices of the trans community and reflected the seriousness of the day and its message. It featured a speech on behalf of the TGD Film festival which highlighted the important advocacy work they do, and a cabaret performance by Mama Alto’s which included reflections by her on transphobia, the meaning of IDAHOBIT and importance of celebrating it.

I have had a lot of friends and colleages reach out to me about AMPLIFY The response has been a combination of enthusiastic support, curiosity and genuine questions about exactly who we are. The overwhelming feedback is that things need to change in Australia and love the fact that we are doing something about it. The fact that lots of people are grappling with exactly who we are are makes complete sense; we are trying to do something really new and we have a big comms challenge ahead of us. Luckily we have an amazing CEO in Georgina Harrisson and CMO in Fiona Le Brocq and we are well and truly up for the challenge. There are a lot of big issues in Australia right now and our community has decided to start by focusing on the housing crisis. The Australian people are consistently saying they arent happy with the direction the country is going in, they dont feel their voice is being heard and that they want to make a difference on the really important issues. At the same time it has become increasingly hard for politicians to achieve the goals that they want to achieve. It is easy to criticise politicians but we all agree that our politicians would be more effective if the system was set up to make their jobs easier rather than harder. So how does AMPLIFY help and why should you get involved. 1 We are community led. The areas we focus on and the positions we advocate for will be determined by our community. We believe in the power of community to come together and come up with really smart and thoughtful policy ideas. We are looking to find “Uncommon Ground.” We have a fantastic policy team led by the brilliant Rory Gallagher and including Natalie Laifer, Joel Bassat and others who are doing a bunch of really smart and creative things to really empower our community and help them come up wth the best possible ideas. 2 We are fiercely non partisan. We are building a community that Australian’s of all backgrounds and walks of life are part of. Our community will go where the evidence leads it. 3 Once our community reaches a position on a policy area, we will use the power of our community to advocate for those policies. Together with our community we will communicate through the media, social media, community organisations and directly to Government and help drive the right change that our country needs. So many people have said to me over the last few years that they are frustrated about the direction we are going in as a country and really want to make a difference. If that resonates with you, check out our page at AMPLIFY and get involved. The most tangible way to get involved is to apply to be part of our 100 person community deliberation on housing in February 2025. This is your chance to really make a difference.
