Updates

  • We're one of six regional Victorian councils supporting people to make informed decisions when upgrading to rooftop solar systems and storage batteries, quality hot water heat pumps, and reverse cycle heating and cooling systems. 🌿🏡   As a member of the Goulburn Murray Climate Alliance, we are participating in the Goulburn Murray Solar Savers program, a program that helps community members navigate renewable energy options for their homes and businesses.   The program combines a fully vetted installer, endorsed product list, as well as available rebates and answers to frequently asked questions.  Suppliers and installers are invited to tender to be involved in the Goulburn Murray Solar Savers program. The closing date for submissions is 12 midday on Wednesday, 15 January 2025.  Find out more by visiting https://lnkd.in/gNbgshZQ

  • We are one of four councils to be awarded grant funding under the expansion of the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Outreach Initiative!  The CALD Outreach Initiative supports families from CALD backgrounds to access kindergarten so that their children can thrive in the education system.     The Alpine Shire has the largest percentage of households speaking languages other than English across north east Victoria, with increasing numbers of children from CALD backgrounds being enrolled in early childhood centres across the region.     Through the grant funding, our team will improve processes for early identification of children from CALD backgrounds living in the Alpine Shire so that they can increase awareness and knowledge of early childhood services amongst their families.     In doing so, they will identify barriers to accessing kindergarten and support their connection to early childhood services, including working with schools to improve school readiness.     For more information, visit https://lnkd.in/g_nGU2UV

  • We are proud to announce that fifty-six community groups, businesses, and not-for-profits were awarded a share of over $260,000 through three funding programs for the 2024/25 financial year. 🙌🎉 🧑🌾 Fourteen community projects and initiatives received a share of $80,000 in funding through our 2024/25 Community Grants Program, which focussed on enhancing the valuable activities of community groups across the Alpine Shire with an aim to increase connection, invite sporting access and participation, revitalise our local environments and contribute to thriving communities.  Almost all of the projects and initiatives focused on increasing connection within Alpine communities, including infrastructure upgrades to improve participation, workshops and community spaces to bring people together, and building resources to develop knowledge and skills.  🎨 Seven community groups, businesses and not-for-profits were awarded funding through our once-off Kiewa Valley Flood and Landslip Grant Program, which aimed to support communities of the Kiewa Valley affected by the October 2022 flood and landslip event to achieve recovery outcomes and plan for a more flood-resilient future. The Bogong High Plains Road landslip in October 2022 had a significant impact on the Kiewa Valley and this opportunity gave these communities the opportunity to highlight their needs and lead their recovery. 🏃♀️ Forty-two events received a share of over $180,000 through our Event Funding Program, which is committed to supporting a wide range of community and tourism events with the aim of strengthening communities, increasing visitation and stimulating economies.  The diverse representation of events reflected both local interests and tourism opportunities. ➡️ For a full list of successful applicants, head to our website: https://lnkd.in/grxDsMHp We extend our thanks and appreciation to all applicants who took the time to submit their proposals. 📷 Event photographs provided by previous successful applicants

  • Students across the Alpine Shire helped plant for their futures in preparation for Planet Ark's National Tree Day on the last Sunday of July! With the help of our Sustainability and Open Spaces teams, students braved the cold and the wet to plant native grasses, shrubs, and trees across Bright, Dederang, Wandiligong, Harrietville and Myrtleford. These plants were sourced to suit the environment and help to grow sustainable habitats for existing flora and fauna. A key feature of this year's activities included an interactive presentation about the creatures who live in these unique environments.  Students were encouraged to reflect on the animals that rely on these places for food and shelter and consider the ecosystems that exist within natural environments.  Planet Ark has been running National Tree Day since 1996 and we are proud to have supported this initiative with schools across the Alpine Shire since 2015. Thank you to all of the students, teachers and parents that got involved with this annual event and to the volunteers who took part throughout the week. #AlpineShireCouncil #AlpineShire #NationalTreeDay

  • We are thrilled to announce that we have joined AlburyCity, Indigo Shire Council and Wodonga Council to expand Halve Waste's Soft Plastic Recycling program further into regional Australia. The Soft Plastic Program has been operating as a trial in Albury and Wodonga since late 2022, with 2,000 households participating and resulting in around three tonnes of soft plastics diverted from landfill. Starting 1 August 2024, an additional 12,000 households that receive a kerbside waste collection service can begin recycling soft plastics right from home. Councillor Sarah Nicholas, CEO Will Jeremy and Waste Services Officer Nathan Wenn attended the launch of the expansion last week alongside Cleanaway Waste Management and the Australian Food and Grocery Council. Since program registration opened on 16 July, we have had just under 500 Alpine households sign up to take part, which equates to approximately 10% of our homes that receive a kerbside service. We're proud to see so many of our community members are just as excited as we are! Thank you to Nathan and our Sustainability Coordinator Bron for their efforts in bringing soft plastics recycling to the Alpine Shire. • We all may know who won the men's Euros, but we reckon the real winner was the Myrtleford Savoy Soccer Club at the reopening of its newly refurbished facilities last week! ⚽ 🏆 Around 40 people braved the cold to witness the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, including many of the passionate volunteers that make up the Club. This $1.9M project included remodeling the change rooms, expanding the kitchen, establishing a first aid room, relocating the umpires' room, and upgrading the public toilets, building access, and car parking to ensure accessibility for all.  The new facilities are now more energy-efficient, featuring LED sensor lights, reverse cycle air conditioning, and energy-efficient appliances.  The Soccer Club forms part of the Albury Wodonga Football Association and has 284 registered members. Of these members, 101 are MiniRoos – young and upcoming soccer stars aged between 4 – 11 years. This long-standing project saw Council acting on behalf of the Soccer Club, providing project management and grant administration services. Thank you to the Australian Government's Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program for generously funding this project. 💬 Read all about it on our website: https://lnkd.in/gXTdU9kD
