Our health, our choice, our way.

About us

Our vision is that all Aboriginal people enjoy a high quality of health and wellbeing. Our mission is that the Aboriginal Health Council will work in ways that maximise the capacity of the Aboriginal community in determining their health and wellbeing by ensuring Community participation and Community ownership. AHCSA Objectives: 1. Operate as the peak body for Aboriginal health in South Australia 2. Improve the health outcomes for all Aboriginal people of South Australia, promoting and advancing the community’s commitment to physical, social and emotional wellbeing and quality of life 3. Build the capacity of members to create a strong and enduring Aboriginal Community Controlled health sector and contribute to improving the capacity of mainstream health services to respond appropriately to the health needs of the Aboriginal community of South Australia 4. Contribute to the development of a well qualified and trained Aboriginal health sector workforce AHCSA works with communities through its Members to ensure that governments and government departments clearly hear community needs. Therefore, AHCSA’s role is to act as a ‘watchdog’ over the provision of health services appropriately meeting community needs. AHCSA is committed to and endorses the NACCHO definition of Aboriginal health and primary health care. We would like to acknowledge this land that we meet on today is the Traditional Lands of the Kaurna people and that we respect their spiritual relationship with their country and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still important to the living people today. We also welcome Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples visiting from other parts of Australia and respect their cultures.

  • NACCHO Australia’s 2024 Members Conference (4-5 December, Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country) was an excellent opportunity to connect with ACCHOs, Affiliates and see some of the inspiring work that is occurring across the country. We saw Australian Institute for Health and Wellbeing statistics that confirm despite significantly less funding than mainstream practices (62% less on average), ACCHOs deliver more episodes of care and are the preferred providers for Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people. With 20% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people nationally saying they want to access an ACCHO but are unable given their location, we know there is more to do to strengthen our sector, and to ensure that Governments stay committed to the Closing The Gap Priority Reforms. We celebrated anniversaries for four of AHCSA’s Member Services: Nunkuwarrin Yunti (50 years), Nganampa Health Council Incorporated (40 years), Oak Valley Health Service (40 years) and PORT LINCOLN ABORIGINAL HEALTH SERVICE INC (30 years), and watched the graduation for the first cohort of TAE graduates from Community-Controlled RTOs. Celebrating the strength and longevity of our Member Services alongside the new workforce who will continue to grow the sector was a privilege.

      +1
  • Today at the NACCHO Australia Conference, our very own Emma Tahuri, Principal Lead of Elder Population Health, discussed the important work that Elder Care Support (ECS) does. To build her presentation, Emma spoke directly to front-line workers of the ECS program to share their experiences, challenges, solutions, and most importantly, the success stories in the community. The ECS staff have clearly been able to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of Elders. One front-line staff member spoke about how, through quarterly SEWB/ECS workshops, Elders have become more actively involved in their community and are attending social activities and workshops. Previously, Elders would have spent time sitting at home, isolated from the community, family, and friends. These activities include walking groups, balance for life, aqua aerobics, yoga, bingo, arts and crafts, and more. We’re so proud of the Elder Care Support program, its staff, and all they have achieved. Thank you, NACCHO, for inviting Emma to speak about the program.
