  • This month, Google unveiled a new #quantum chip, which it claims takes five minutes to solve a problem that would currently take the world's fastest super computers 10 septillion—1 followed by 25 zeros—years to complete. For now, the chip, named "Willow", remains an experimental device, still years away from truly being able to power a quantum computer that can solve real-world problems. Nonetheless, this is a breakthrough that represents significant progress, in particular in what's known as error correction. Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/djh-HkNv

  • Pushing the boundaries of what's possible - see how Advanced Navigation's Boreas A70 FOG helped to maximize Tamboritha's ROV capabilities in challenging blackwater conditions at 1200m depth. By upgrading to our FOG INS, Tamboritha's Saab Seaeye Cougar XT ROV achieved the precision needed for conductor placement in zero visibility conditions, without requiring an expensive system overhaul. • Ditching GPS for terrain fingerprints 🌍🖐️ #AdvancedNavigation has signed an MoU with MBDA to co-develop an inertial navigation system integrating their breakthrough NILEQ technology. Just like matching fingerprints, NILEQ's technology—based on neuromorphic sensors—scans the changing terrain as an airborne system flies across it, and matches it to an existing database of the Earth’s surface. Once a match is locked, the positioning data is fed into the navigation system. This will enable drones and airborne vehicles to navigate unlimited distances over land—completely independent of GPS. 🌎 From enabling safer #BVLOS drone operations in cities, agriculture and infrastructure inspections, to supporting search and rescue, mining, and more—this dual-use technology will change the way we navigate the world. It’s always a thrill to translate novel, complex research and technology into meaningful practical applications for both commercial and defence sectors. Thank you Edd Gent for covering our story, read more about the technology in IEEE Spectrum. https://lnkd.in/gyDg5aya

  • 📢 Speaker announcement This month, we will be sending our application engineer Matthew Suntup to ABMEC Conference & Exhibition 2024 to talk about the future of #mining. Representing the British mining supply chain, ABMEC is the place to connect with government leaders, innovators and engineers to explore the latest mining intelligence. Global mining operations face a critical hurdle in remote #positioning and real-time data collection, greatly impinging operational efficiency. Matthew will give insights into how bespoke inertial navigation solutions are making a difference - specifically how they can ensure the availability of real-time, accurate position and #navigation data in mine sites. • The world’s largest #coral has just been discovered near Solomon Islands, by scientists at the National Geographic Society’s Pristine Seas expedition team. The mega coral - a collection of nearly a billion genetically identical coral polyps that form one organism rather than a reef - is bigger than a blue whale, Earth’s largest animal. It’s so enormous it can be seen from space. Although scientists say the newly discovered coral is in good health, they are not exempt from the effects of global warming and overfishing. It is hoped that this discovery will inspire more protections for #marine habitats around the world. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/gK-YG3u8

  • This week, Japan launched the world’s first wood-panelled #satellite into space. Weighing just 900g, LignoSat arrived at the International Space Station #iss and was released into orbit above the Earth. The goal is for scientists to learn about the feasibility of using wood for #space exploration, where the material is more durable than on Earth as there is no water or oxygen that would rot or inflame it. There are also hopes that wood might be able to provide material for colonies in space in the future, and create less pollution than metal satellites when they burn-up on re-entry at end of life.
