Titled 'Flood Failure to Future Fairness', the report highlights what inquiry chair Dr Daniel Mulino MP described as a “collective failure” by insurers to fulfill their obligations to policyholders after the 2022 floods. The Cairns marine shipyards have reached a new milestone with the opening of a $16 million facility, partly thanks to the Miles Government's Industry Partnership Program (IPP). Norship ’s new facility was officially opened today by Deputy Premier and Treasurer Cameron Dick and Minister for Tourism and Sport and Member for Cairns Michael Healy. This project will not only reinforce vital industry supply chains and strengthen marine infrastructure in North Queensland but will also support 32 new jobs over the next decade. It aligns with the broader initiatives such as the Cairns Marine Precinct - Common User Facility, further diversifying the region’s economy. ANNOUNCEMENT | Hong Kong’s home carrier, Cathay Pacific, is recommencing flights to Cairns with the support of the Queensland Government through the Attracting Aviation Investment Fund. Starting soon, Cairns will welcome three services per week using Cathay Pacific’s two-class configured Airbus A330 aircraft. This achievement is the result of a successful delegation from Tropical North Queensland visiting Hong Kong in August 2023. The group, led by Tourism Minister Michael Healy, included representatives from Cairns Airport, Tourism Tropical North Queensland, Department of Tourism and Innovation, Advance Cairns, and Trade and Investment Queensland. Great to be in Brisbane for the stakeholder briefing ahead of the tabling for the 2024-25 Queensland Budget with Premier Steven Miles MP and Deputy Premier and Treasurer Cameron Dick MP. We're pleased to see funding flow to two major infrastructure projects: the Cairns Regional Council Cairns Water Security Stage 1 project and the expansion of Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service through the Cairns Health and Innovation Centre. Both of these are critical to livability. Without adequate water supply and a robust health system, our region won't grow. A bold plan to future-proof two critical Far North industries has been revealed by the Miles Government. Under the new workforce plan, by 2026, the aviation sector will employ an additional 538 workers (a 20.9% increase), and the maritime and marine industry will see an increase of 873 workers (a 7.8% increase). Great to work with Jobs Queensland and sector leaders throughout the development of the 'Cairns Region Workforce Development Plan'. As the aviation and maritime industries in Cairns expand, this plan will help address local skills needs and create significant opportunities for our community.
