Without a proof of concept, your idea is intangible. Here’s what happens: 🚫 Investors can’t see the potential. 🚫 Early adopters hesitate. 🚫 Your product stays an idea instead of gaining traction. But a visual proof of concept changes everything. 🎯 It shines a light on your unique technology. 🎯 It makes your idea feel real in the minds of investors and early adopters. 🎯 It makes it easy to understand your product and how it's used. The truth is that most start-ups don’t need a full sales video pre-market - that's expensive. You need something simple, effective, and tangible to communicate your vision. I loved this example from OstomySecure, who are currently in clinical trials. The video quickly shows how the product integrates with the human body. --------------- Does your start-up need something like this to pitch or validate your idea? Let’s talk.

Simplifying isn’t dumbing down. It’s creating a common language that your investors and customers can understand. Just because an investor isn't familiar with medical jargon doesn’t mean they won’t grasp how the technology works, why it’s different, and the benefits it provides. Why? Because vocabulary and reading level are 2 different things. Simplifying complex products is more about translation than dumbing down. Speak their language, and they’ll see the value. When Netflix simplifies its messaging, it’s for mass accessibility—broad audiences with broad interests. That’s their strength: clarity without complexity. But if you do the same with a complex, valuable technology, you risk saying nothing of value. What does “dumbing down” look like? - Instead of “angiogenesis inhibitors,” you say, “something that fights tumours.” - It’s vague, incomplete, and strips away the essence of your product’s value. Simplifying is different: - Instead of “angiogenesis inhibitors,” you say, “a treatment that blocks the blood supply to tumours.” - It’s clear, accurate, and preserves the full value of your innovation. Here’s how to simplify without dumbing down: 1. Highlight the words your audience is unlikely to be familiar with. 2. Replace that jargon with relatable alternatives wherever possible. 3. If no replacement exists, offer a simple, clear explanation. Think of Steve Jobs introducing the iPhone. - He didn’t say, “individualism that fits in your fist.” - He said, “an iPod, a phone, and an internet communicator in one.” Simplifying isn’t lowering the bar—it’s building a bridge. -------------- This clip from Blackberry is a fun illustration of what happens when you can't communicate the technical and instead "dumb it down."

Here are 7 lessons that made the first 4 years in business a bit easier. I shared them with a cohort of IGNITE UCC start-ups. I opened the talk with: "I’m a hypocrite. What I’m about to share, I’m still working on. But I know enough to know they’re important." 1. I needed to learn business fundamentals like how to see my business as a funnel so I can get consistent lead flow week to week, month to month. 2. I needed to get in the game because learning won’t grow my business alone - doing will. 3. I needed to use an app like You Need A Budget to manage my finances and see all the money coming in an out. Paying tax monthly or quarterly is easier too. 4. I needed to iterate on 1 business till I got traction, not start multiple and see what works. 5. I needed to delegate by documenting all my processes, interviewing many people and filling knowledge gaps by buying mentoring or training. 6. I needed to prioritise projects because there’s a disproportionate outcome on different types of work. A referral partner is worth more than a lead. A reoccurring customer is more valuable than a new sale. 7. I needed to network because a warm intro is worth 20 cold pitches. Best of luck to all the IGNITE start-ups! It was a privilege to share what’s helped me so far on my own journey.

I love how IGNITE UCC have used our testimonial videos. Instead of the usual “XYZ is amazing” soundbites, they’ve created a carousel of start-up stories. Each one captures: - Where the founder started. - The challenges they faced. - How IGNITE helped them transform. It’s not just a highlight reel of praise—it’s personal, relatable, and impactful. Why does this work so well? 1️⃣ It connects. Every story speaks to a different type of founder, a different challenge, and a different dream outcome. 2️⃣ It builds belief. The biggest hurdle for many founders isn’t doubting the programme—it’s doubting themselves. These stories show what’s possible. 3️⃣ It’s practical. In my experience, testimonial projects often fall through because of logistics—people drop out, schedules clash, or there’s no clear plan. IGNITE sidesteps all of that by filming at their events. Everyone’s already there, making it efficient and seamless. What’s even more powerful than a wall of testimonials? A wall of stories that demonstrate the transformation your organisation provides.

How do we simplify complex businesses? It starts with understanding. If we can’t understand it, we can’t simplify it. And if we can’t simplify it, we can’t make it resonate. At Waking Dreams, our process is: Understand → Simplify → Resonate. Here’s how: Understand: - We ask 40 deep-dive questions to learn how your business works. - We read everything we can find about you online. - We listen to your customer. Simplify: - We break down the language into concepts people already get with analogies. - We reduce the reading level of the script but preserve what's valuable. - We focus on big, isolated messages for each video. Resonate: - We focus the video on the strongest aspect of your business - Your mission, a unique feature, great results. - We bring in visuals to show how customers actually use your product. Show, don't tell. - We chose music, title, and graphic styles so the video 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙𝑠 like how great your product will be to use. The goal? To create a vision so clear that customers and investors can understand your business in 60 seconds. -------------- A snapshot of me at the whiteboard during a client brainstorm at Dogpatch Labs.

What if your video’s hook is off? Worse, what if you only realise it after the shoot? Here’s a potential AI solution: I repurposed an old ad with an updated package name. (And I'll probably do it again soon) It's like getting a tear in your trousers patched up for another year’s wear. Instead of a full reshoot, I overdubbed the dialogue using a mix of ElevenLabs and HeyGen. Here’s how it worked: ElevenLabs: It clones your voice “professionally” with just 30 minutes of audio. (Though fair warning: the Irish accent isn’t perfect.) HeyGen: It handled lip-syncing better than 4 or 5 other tools I tested. So, I recorded the new audio and let HeyGen handle the sync. It cost about €40 total, using the entry package for both tools. A fraction of the cost of a reshoot. Much less hassle. And the best part? I can tweak and update the dialogue for this video forever. Pretty good. Of course, this isn’t guaranteed to work for every project. Your mileage may vary—especially if the original delivery was emotive. But in this case, nobody I showed noticed. See the original intro vs the updated one below.
