It is with sadness and pride that we marked the fifth anniversary of the death of our colleague, Paul with the award of the Paul Anthony McDermott Memorial Scholarship to Ms. Sarah Jones, BCL (European), to support her progression to the Barrister-at-Law degree programme at the The Honorable Society of King's Inns, where she is now a student. The scholarship, arranged through the UCD Foundation, was supported by a number of law alumni some of whom were colleagues of Paul's at the Law Library. Pictured with Ms. Jones are Professor Laurent Pech (Dean, UCD Sutherland School of Law) and Senior Counsel Mr. John Trainor SC at an event to celebrate the awarding of the scholarship.

Happy Birthday EIRSAT-1! 🎉🛰️ One year in orbit and what a year it has been. Ireland's first satellite, built by a student-led team from University College Dublin in partnership with European Space Agency - ESA, was launched into space in December 2023. This historic moment took the nation forward to greater participation in the global space industry. We welcome the announcement this week that University College Dublin Centre for One Health has been designated a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre. VP Research, Innovation and Impact Prof Kate Robson Brown commented: "One Health research is a major focus at UCD, aligning closely with the university’s strategic priorities and Ireland’s commitment to integrated health solutions. With deep expertise across human and veterinary medicine, environmental science, and agriculture, UCD is uniquely equipped to lead impactful One Health research that addresses the complex interconnections between human, animal, and environmental health. "Through interdisciplinary collaboration and a focus on high-priority issues, UCD advances One Health as both a research and policy imperative. This commitment positions UCD as a leader in addressing multifaceted health challenges and promoting sustainable health practices across Ireland and internationally. As a World Health Organization (WHO)-designated center, UCD is recognized for its contributions to global health efforts and for driving innovation in One Health research." Mr. Declan McCourt, RIP We were greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Declan McCourt last Friday. Declan has been an outstanding friend to the UCD Sutherland School of Law over many years in his role of Chair of the Development Council, the advisory board to the Dean. Declan worked tirelessly to advance the ambitions of the School on all fronts, showing an astute sensitivity to our education and scholarly ethos. We are delighted to announce that Dipti Pandya has been appointed Director of UCD Research at University College Dublin. This is a key leadership role, heading up the UCD Research unit to develop strategy, build relationships and support the university’s ambitious research targets. Dipti was previously a vital part of UCD Research senior management as head of Research Programmes, leading the national, EU, and international funding advisory and contract teams. She is Chair of EARMA (European Association for Research Managers and Administrators) and a board member of Léargas. Prior to joining UCD, Dipti was Director of the Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences. Commenting on her appointment, she said: "I am dedicated to making it easier to do world class research at UCD, and will drive a priority to develop enhanced research support for the full project lifecycle for the UCD research community." After nine years of dedicated Board service, Tom O'Connor has stepped down from the Board of #UCDFoundation. Tom served as the Foundation Chair since 2021. His commitment to the Foundation and his love of UCD was evident throughout his time on the Board, and all of us on the UCD Alumni and Development team are grateful for his leadership, enthusiasm, and wonderful good humour. Thank you for everything, Tom, and wishing you the very best for this next chapter!
