🌟 Preserving Heritage Through Design 🌟 This summer, I had the privilege of working on a meaningful project that combines engineering and Irish history. Collaborating with my father, Eugene Murphy, a Chartered Engineer, I created a 3D CAD model of the historic Mill Wheel at Thoor Ballylee, along with detailed working drawings for the Sluice Gate, which once operated at Yeats’ Tower in Gort, County Galway. The newly constructed Mill Wheel will be unveiled in Spring 2025, honoring the craftsmanship of the past while supporting the restoration of this iconic site. It’s incredible to play a small part in preserving Thoor Ballylee, the former home of W.B. Yeats, which has been brought back to life by the Yeats Thoor Ballylee Society and sponsors after years of flood damage. 📌 Want to learn more about Thoor Ballylee? ÉireComposites Teo , University of Galway & Engineers Ireland - West Region hosted a hybrid CPD event on the "Reblade" project recently. The event was well attended both in-person & online as the audience listened to the findings from Conor Kelly (ÉireComposites Teo ), Yadong Jiang (University of Galway), Tomás Flanagan (CEO, ÉireComposites Teo ), William Finnegan (University of Galway. As Ireland transitions to a fully renewable-based electricity grid, the use of sustainable materials within renewable energy technologies becomes more prevalent. Wind energy is now Ireland’s main source of renewable energy but we are now seeing that landfill is the main end-of-life strategy for wind blades. In response to this, the ÉireComposites Teo & University of Galway REBLADE project looked to explore other strategies. In particular, the key enabling technology explored in this project is the use of thermoplastic composite materials in large wind turbine blades, coupled with an optimised design that is suitable for reblading of the current Irish wind energy fleet to extend their operational life. During this hybrid event, Conor Kelly (R&D Engineer at ÉireComposites) presented a comprehensive overview of the manufacturing and material testing of both a demonstrator and a full-scale wind turbine blade. Dr Yadong Jiang (Lecturer in Civil Engineering at the University of Galway) discussed the structural testing of the full-scale blade and the use of the results to validate the numerical models that were used to design the blade. The work was completed as part of the REBLADE project (grant no. 21/RDD/630), which is funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) through their RDD Funding Programme. #sustainability #sustainablewindturbineblades #windenergy
