Rainwater drainage systems are as critical as any other component of a building’s infrastructure, especially in extreme climates. At a Nordic data centre, we identified challenges with a drainage system that, while compliant with specifications, wasn’t optimised for temperatures plunging below -35°C. Harsh winter conditions caused failures in pipework, putting the integrity of this vital facility at risk. CAPCON were engaged to review the design, materials, and installation practices. By recommending tailored solutions to suit these extreme environmental demands, we ensured the facility's long-term resilience and protection. At CAPCON , we recently contributed to a Milan Data Centre Project during RIBA Stage 3 by conducting a feasibility study for a siphonic drainage system. 💦 The original design specified gravity drainage, requiring over 20 downpipes (160mm diameter) on each side of the building, taking up valuable cavity space. Our team proposed a siphonic drainage system that: - Reduced downpipes to 7 per side - Decreased pipe diameter from 160mm to 110mm This solution freed up critical cavity space, aligning with the client’s goals for optimisation. Our findings have provided a clear path for the design team as they move forward to RIBA Stage 4. We're proud to offer practical, efficient solutions that enhance project outcomes.
