🔍 Hiljutine DHL-i lennukiõnnetus Leedus tõi taas tähelepanu keskpunkti hübriidsõja keerukad taktikad. Kuigi seekord ei leidnud kinnitust seos Venemaaga, on see sündmus märgilise tähendusega. 💭 @TalTechi Küberjulgeoleku Keskuse ( TalTech Centre for Digital Forensics and Cyber Security) vanemlektor Adrian Venables jagab ekspertarvamust: "Hübriidsõjal puudub üksainus definitsioon ja just mitmetähenduslikkus ongi selle üks peamisi tugevusi."

  • 🎄 The holidays are coming in hot, but guess what? Cyber threats don’t do mulled wine breaks. 🎅 While we’re decking the halls and prepping for Santa, hackers are busy scoping out holiday phishing emails and weak passwords. They’re not sipping cocoa—they’re plotting. So, we’re wrapping up the year with tight security and perfectly knotted bows, making sure the only intruder this season is the big guy in red. 🦌🎅 Here’s how to keep your network as festive as your ugly sweater collection: 🎁 Pause before you click! That e-card might look sweet, but "Claim your free Elf NFT" screams naughty list. 🎁 Give your team the gift of knowledge! A quick reminder about spotting phishing attempts? Priceless. 🎁 Keep an eye on the weird stuff! Cyber Grinches thrive on sneaky behavior—like logging in from Whoville. Remember, whether it’s stopping cyber mischief or just keeping your inbox full of cheer, a little extra vigilance can save your holly-jolly vibes. Stay secure, stay merry, and may your firewalls be as strong as your holiday spirit. 🎄✨ Got your own tips for staying cyber-safe this season? Drop them below—let’s make this a Christmas we won’t wish to forget! 👇 #Cybersecurity #StaySecure #OnlineSafety #CyberAwareness #PhishingScams #TechTips #DataProtection #DigitalSafety #CyberResilience #TalTech #Christmas2024 #FestiveTips #LearnAndGrow #SecurityMatters #HolidayHacks

  • 🚀 Cybersecurity Training in Action! 🔐   In mid-November, we had an amazing time collaborating with colleagues from Masaryk University Cybersecurity Laboratory as part of the CHESS Cyber-Security Excellence Hub Project. Together, we organized two engaging cyber exercises that brought together students and staff from:   📍 TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology 📍 Tallinn Polytechnic School 📍 Kehtna Vocational Education Centre   These exercises, hosted on the Masaryk University Cybersecurity Laboratory’s innovative INJECT Exercise Platform, were not only educational but also incredibly fun! 🎉 We spent two afternoons learning, collaborating, and tackling cybersecurity challenges, strengthening skills on all sides.   A big thank you to everyone who participated and made this experience a success. Let’s keep building a resilient and skilled cybersecurity community! 🌐💻   ☝ In addition, we listened to a presentation by Pavel Čeleda, whose goal during his visit was to have an informal discussion with colleagues in Estonia about teaching cybersecurity, with a particular focus on incorporating tabletop exercises into cybersecurity courses. _________________ The Cyber-security Excellence Hub in Estonia 🇪🇪 and South Moravia 🇨🇿 (CHESS) brings together leading R&I institutions in both regions to build connected innovation ecosystems to address one of the most important issues confronting Europe today: Cyber-security: https://chess-eu.cs.ut.ee/. The EU-funded 🇪🇺 CHESS project will create a cybersecurity excellence hub aiming to develop a joint cross-border cybersecurity research and innovation strategy and running pilots to support identification of strengths and gaps, focusing on six challenge areas: Internet of Secure Things (IoST), security certification, verification of trustworthy software, security preservation in blockchain, post-quantum cryptography and human-centric aspects of cybersecurity. #CyberSecurity #OnlineSafety #CyberSecurityTraining #EducationInTech #EUFunded #CHESSProject #CyberExercises #INJECTPlatform #TabletopExercises #LearnAndGrow

  • 🎉 TalTech Cyber Team’s Whirlwind Adventure at Rennes CTF! 🕵️♂️💻 Last week, five of TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology’s brightest packed their laptops (and a generous supply of coffee ☕) for an epic trip to Rennes, France, to tackle an exhilarating #CTF challenge! 🇫🇷✈️ 🏙️ Despite the crisp winter air, the event’s city-center location made exploring Rennes a treat. The competition itself? A thrilling test of skill on a proprietary local platform 🎯— diving into tasks like network scanning, hunting for vulnerable files, and uncovering hidden services. While most instructions were in French 🇫🇷 (merci to the English slides! 🙏), the challenges were brilliantly crafted and kept everyone on their toes. Shoutout to the organizers for top-tier catering 🍽️ — fueling focus and creativity! ✨ Highlights of the Adventure: A fascinating conversation with a French government official revealed an unexpected connection to Estonia’s President 🇪🇪 — proving once again how wonderfully small and interconnected the world can be. The presence of sponsors like Airbus Defense ✈️ added a unique defense-tech flavor to the event, sparking interesting discussions and offering valuable insights. Language barriers? A curveball for sure, but the welcoming atmosphere and innovative tasks made it all part of the fun. 🏆 The Awards Ceremony: Though the awards were announced entirely in French, our team took the universal approach—clapping along enthusiastically 👏 and celebrating the shared spirit of collaboration and achievement. It’s clear that international participation is growing, and this first-time experience was one for the books. 🚨 A Journey Home with Twists: An unexpected flight delay turned into a spontaneous Paris adventure 🗼, complete with snowy walks around the Louvre (sadly, the heights of the Eiffel Tower stayed out of sight ❄️ ). Add in some subway strikes 🚇 for good measure, and you’ve got a true travel saga. A reroute through Warsaw 🇵🇱 meant an overnight detour, but the team eventually landed back in Tallinn—tired yet buzzing with unforgettable stories. 🌍 This wasn’t just a competition; it was a whirlwind of innovation, cultural exchange, and unforgettable memories. Huge thanks to the organizers European Cyber Week - Official page and everyone who made this event special. Until next time, Rennes — au revoir! 💻🎉 And of course, a massive shoutout to our stellar team: Marc Ziegler, Herman Karu, Anton Vishnevski, Gustav Gretskov, and Villem Susi! #CyberAdventures #TalTechInRennes #CTFChallenge #InnovationAndTeamwork #EuroCyberWeek #TalTech #Cybersecurity #IT #TravelMishaps

PHD Candidate and Early Stage Researcher at Tallinn University of Technology

As part of my ongoing PhD research, I started exploring secure-by-design principles for industrial control systems in 2021. It is clear that this topic is gaining increasing importance and highly empowered by industrial standards and EU regulations are also coming into play. I am thrilled to recently attend two events that addressed that topic! Yesterday, I attended the "Intelligent Rail Summit '24" in Tallinn ", and today, I remotely followed "DNV NightWatch 2024 - Tackling the dilemma: Cyber-resilience and technology innovation in industrial environments " event in Amsterdam. Learning about the Railway applications – Cybersecurity CLC/TS 50701:2023" standard and IACS UR E26/E27 for the maritime industry was so valuable. I think that this timely knowledge will be a good support for my upcoming lecture on secure-by-design for our “Fundamentals of Cyber-Physical Systems Security” course at TalTech. If you are familiar with other domain-specific cybersecurity standards that address the secure_by_design of industrial control systems, I would really appreciate sharing them with me.
