💔Estonia continues redefining what it means to be a digital society, demonstrating that modern governance can be efficient and empathetic. With the introduction of e-marriage a few years ago, many joked that divorce was the only thing to digitise. As of this December, Estonians can take the first step in divorce proceedings by submitting an online application. Enel Pungas, Head of the Population Operations Department at the Ministry of the Interior, highlights the significance: “Divorce is often an emotional and life-altering process. It’s not the government’s role to make it harder for people. Instead, we aim to simplify the associated bureaucracy, saving people time and effort.” This e-divorce service is part of a broader initiative to create life-event-based services that anticipate and streamline citizens' interactions with the state. As Kersti Ringmets, Head of the Population Register Development Service, explains: “The goal is to offer proactive, personalised services. For example, when a child is born, we already know the steps parents must take—from registering the birth to applying for documents. These could all be integrated into a single, seamless process.” The e-divorce service offers several practical benefits 📜 Pre-filled application with data that the government already know to reduce errors and save time 🕰️ No need for joint visits to government offices to start the divorce process, saving time, emotional strain and logistical effort 🥹 Greater convenience during a challenging life period It’s important to note that the 30-day reflection period still applies, ensuring that simplifying the application process does not lead to impulsive decisions. #DigitalDivorce #ModernGovernance
