With the next version of the open-source SiP, we will be testing a custom micro-inductor on a silicon substrate that is only 200um thick. These inductors from Würth Elektronik can be embedded directly into the PCB, freeing up space on the top and bottom layer. The RDC of this inductor is relatively high due to the number of windings needed to provide the high inductance required by the slow switching PMIC. However, as the SiP is an ultra-low power platform, this shouldn't be a problem. By moving the inductors to the inside of the board, additional space is available on the top layer. This allows us to further reduce the footprint of the SiP. There are a lot of interesting applications for these ultra-small inductors/coupled inductors/transformers especially for signal isolation.
