At the start of the 20th century, ironing was a strenuous and quite perilous endeavor. It wasn´t just that you were holding a hot and heavy metal object filled with sizzling coals or smoldering iron. You needed all your strength to push it firmly over clothing. Thanks to fabric softeners, today´s high-tech irons glide effortlessly over your laundry. That´s because silicone-based softeners contain additives that attach to fibers and reduce friction between the fabric and your iron. LIOSIL® FC 201 E is a silicone fluid emulsion that prevents fabrics from wrinkling and gives them a nice soft feel. What´s more, the emulsion exhibits excellent easy-ironing properties. #ironing #silicones #fabricsofteners

WACKER BIOSOLUTIONS under New Leadership +++ Mathias Wiedemann will take over as president of WACKER BIOSOLUTIONS on January 1, 2025. He succeeds Susanne Leonhartsberger, who will leave the company at her own request at the end of 2024. “I am delighted that we have been able to recruit Mathias Wiedemann, an outstanding colleague from our own midst, to head our biotech division. I wish him every success in his new role,” says WACKER CEO Christian Hartel. Wiedemann previously headed WACKER’s POLYMERS business in the USA. His new assignment sees him returning to Munich. “BIOSOLUTIONS offers exciting products and services. I look forward to meeting this challenge. We are pursuing ambitious growth targets with a great team. Our goal is to generate one billion euros in sales in 2030,” explains Wiedemann. Mathias Wiedemann studied engineering and business administration at the University of Bremen, where he earned his doctorate in engineering on a scholarship from WACKER BIOSOLUTIONS. He joined WACKER as a project engineer in 2011. After holding several specialist and managerial positions in Germany and abroad, he was most recently responsible for POLYMERS’ business in North and Central America. In May 2024, Wiedemann was also appointed CFO of Wacker Chemical Corporation. Susanne Leonhartsberger took charge of the BIOSOLUTIONS division in 2020. She joined WACKER in 2001 and has been instrumental in developing BIOSOLUTIONS in various functions both in Germany and elsewhere. Development milestones under her leadership include the establishment of an mRNA competence center in Halle/Saale, Germany, in the context of the pandemic-preparedness agreements with the German government. “Susanne Leonhartsberger has taken BIOSOLUTIONS a decisive step forward on its growth path,” emphasizes Hartel. “On behalf of the entire Executive Board, I would like to thank her for her commitment and dedication. We wish her all the best for the future.” 🍀 #biotech #biosolutions #NewLeadership #pressrelease

The size and shape of a poodle, this yellow, four-legged industrial robot is inspecting our chemical plants on its own. Its name is SPOT, and its job includes supporting our plant operators as they make their regular rounds. This robotic dog has many talents: ➡️ It can photograph parts of the plant with the many cameras in its head ➡️ Using trained artificial intelligence, it identifies, records and stores even the tiniest changes or leaks ➡️ It has a thermographic camera for measuring the temperature of individual components ➡️ Built-in gas sensor technology enables SPOT to determine gas quantities in the ppm range There are many other conceivable uses as well, opening up the door to a wide range of factory automation applications. #robodog #robotics #Burghausen #Nünchritz

⚗️ From Science to Success 📈 The development of the Müller-Rochow process some 75 years ago paved the way for methylchlorosilane to be obtained from silicon metal and methyl chloride. This provided the first-ever access to the starting materials needed for the industrial manufacture of silicones and kick-started the global boom in the use of silicone products in many different applications. We are a pioneer in this field, and were the first company in Europe to begin researching silicones. In the following years, WACKER processes laid the foundations for the modern and efficient manufacturing of organochlorosilanes and silicone products. This was the beginning of the success story. These early scientific accomplishments underlie WACKER’s reputation as the European pioneer of silicone chemistry. We now develop, produce and market a versatile product portfolio in a range of complex chemical processes. #WACKERHistory #silicones Image: Silicone production diagram 1955

Historical buildings sometimes still contain cabling from the pioneering age of electrification. Easy to recognize by their lead or textile jacket, these cables hark back to a time when the seamless provision of electricity was not yet a matter of course. In early days, the electrical conductors inside the cables were often insulated using paper soaked in oil or wax, thus reducing their sensitivity to moisture and increasing their dielectric strength. Nowadays, the ordinary low-voltage cables concealed in the plaster walls of houses and apartments usually have a PVC jacket - and silicone is increasingly being used in highly sensitive applications such as emergency power generators and fire alarms. The trick is that, even though the silicone rubber burns ignited, it does not produce loose ash. Instead, it turns into a very hard ceramic layer that continues to provide adequate electrical insulation, even at temperatures of around 1,000 °C. Conductors insulated in this way are ideal for the manufacture of modern safety cables. ELASTOSIL® R 502/75 is a peroxide-curing HCR used to manufacture silicone coatings to insulate cables and conductors, resulting in safety cables that keep functioning in the event of fire. This silicone grade can be easily extruded. #cables #electricity #insulation #silicone #siliconerubber

Today, on World AIDS Day, we honor the millions of lives impacted by HIV/AIDS. At Wacker Biotech, we recognize the incredible strides that have been made in HIV treatment, prevention and research. Although a cure and vaccine have been elusive, we are particularly inspired by recent advancements such as the clinical trials by Moderna and IAVI of an mRNA HIV vaccine. This vaccine candidate represents a bold step forward in the fight against HIV – a disease that has challenged scientists for decades. It builds on groundbreaking research and the efforts of many, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Scripps Research, leveraging advances in structural biology and mRNA biology. Let’s continue to drive innovation, raise awareness and create a future where HIV is no longer a threat to health, dignity and equality. Stay connected and be part of Wacker Biotech’s mission to transform lives through cutting-edge research and innovation. #WorldAIDSDay #HIVAIDS #mRNA #vaccines #biotech #globalhealth
