You got promoted: Senior Software Engineer -> Tech or People Leadership You are a couple of years in, got deep in a couple of tech stacks, but there is something bagging on you. What's next? Is there a next? Lets be fair: For the last decade there was no need to grow past senior. You are getting a good compensation, usually have lots of freedom on how/ where/when to work - you found quiet a cozy bubble to stay in - honestly nothing wrong with it. Unfortunately the upcoming decade will be different for engineers than the past one. Hard skills could get you to senior level, but this is what AI is good at as well. So its on you, to add skills on top of technical excellence. Plan A: You like working with people a lot: Focus on communication, empathy and emotional resilience. You will see it all: Hire people, coach them, mentor them and unfortunately let them go as well. Plan B: You are in this world for tech, go for it. Find nieces that don't have public knowledge available, are regulated or for other reasons hard to come by for LLMs. Its probably a good idea to focus on technical communication and architecture as you will grow into positions that require you to get in touch with senior management more often. Whats your plan A/B or do you have a secret alternative to share?
