"Change is upon us, and action is required to support the future workforce" On the third and final day of QS Reimagine Education 2024 in London, Matteo Quacquarelli previewed the QS World Future Skills Index, with the full version launching in early 2025. The Index found that there is a cluster of countries that are seeing their economies and future industries transform faster than the new skills adoption of their workforce. 70% of countries fall into another cluster where the workforce potential outstrips the pace of economic and industrial innovation. What role does higher education play in the future of skills development? "We hold an absolute responsibility to our future students to ensure that they're not being displaced in tomorrow's workforce," Matteo said. "As a consequence, higher education systems need to build greater agility to sit at the centre of workforce transformation, connecting government policy, procedure, workforce and industry." #QSInsights #WorldFutureSkillsIndex

A distinguished panel of UK higher education experts explored the impacts of local shifts in higher education policy, and the global impact it can have. The panel discussed how UK and Australia rhetoric and policies were "veering wildly" and how this impacts student decision making, and global partnership opportunities. "We're in an extremely interesting and difficult policy environment, felt globally and in the UK," Jamie Arrowsmith, Director of Universities UK International said. In response, Nicholas Hillman, Director of the Higher Education Policy Institute, called for a sector-wide consensus for what policy we would want from the UK government, if we were asked. Though there was no consensus, panellists did suggest some options for paths forward. Nick Hillman suggested better post-study work rules, lower visa fees, or a U-turn on the dependents rule. On the post-graduate route visa, Amy Baker, CEO and co-founder of The PIE, suggested the sector needs to more clearly advocate for the post-graduate route, to students and to businesses who continue to find the visa confusing. However, Jamie Arrowsmith promoted the value of stability in itself. "You don't always have to outbid other countries," Jamie said, because stability is beneficial in itself to international students. Thank you to our panellists for your engaging discussion. Building on yesterday's session at QS Reimagine Education on what a world would look like without universities, experts today looked at what the future may hold for universities. The consensus was that universities will continue existing, but student preferences and workplace demands are changing quickly, and universities need to adapt across curriculum delivery and the student experience to continue being desirable. Dr Michael Spence, President and Provost of UCL suggested that universities will need to inspect and upgrade their on-campus experience in the future: "Lots of institutions that are essentially skills training institutions will go online or will face competition from private providers. But for the multi-disciplinary, comprehensive, research universities, the questions are going to be, what's the quality of your on-campus experience?" Continuing, Dr Spence posited that, with the rise of students taking on part-time work, universities need to meet student demand for a well-rounded university experience in a way that meshes with the next generation of student: "There needs to be opportunities to participate that aren't built on the traditional high commitment clubs and societies kind of model that enable you to deep in and out of different kinds of activities in different places, of building a portfolio of experience while you are at university. In terms of the curriculum, Claude Catala, Vice Rector of Global Engagement at PSL Research University, added, "one very important thing is to try to give our students skills that we are sure will not become obsolete in a few years' time." #QSInsights #QSReimagine

A world without universities - what would we miss out on? To many, it's a difficult question to even consider, but rhetoric from President-elect Trump could be indicative of significant change. Expert panellists explored the unlikely, but not impossible, scenario. If they ceased existing now, society would miss out on a university's research impact, and the local and wider economy would suffer. But it would have far reaching, long-term consequences too. Capacity for upskilling would diminish. Many young people would never gain the skills necessary to enter the workforce. Viggo Stacey | John A. As we navigate serious worldwide shifts - demographic changes, the climate crisis, political instability - how will that impact education? At QS Reimagine Education, Dr Maria Spies took us through what 2025 might bring for education globally. 🎓 Many countries are increasing funding in vocational systems and to build the 'brand' of vocational training to increase the number of skilled workers. 📈 Longstanding barriers to mass uptake of micro-credentials are lowering, with universities and third-party providers increasing their capacity. 🧑🏫 Lifelong learning is increasingly being demanded by businesses; and businesses want to know exactly what skills their employees will develop on a course. 👷♀️ Changes to work and a global imperative for upskilling sees a need between greater ties between education and work. #QSReimagine #QSInsights
