Spicing up the tech scene at Reutlingen University, Nova Germany's team gathered around the drawing board with one goal: to create a hackathon challenge that would stir up some serious curiosity. The challenge involved crafting an automated cocktail mixer setup using CMD tools, sparking students' interest as we presented the challenge. Throughout the hackathon night, their blend of technology and creativity crafted solutions that were not only effective but visually stunning. The migration of traditional lab analysis techniques to high-volume manufacturing in fabs is a key enabler of advanced metrology. One such example is the successful lab-to-fab transition of dynamic secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), which we’re very proud of 😊 A recently published joint paper by IBM and Nova demonstrated the benefits of in-line SIMS in the production environment through several use cases. One intriguing example is the unique ability to detect a potential device failure due to incomplete epitaxy coverage of all nanosheets in a GAA transistor through an on-structure, inline SIMS measurement. This work was first presented at SPIE Advanced Lithography and Patterning conference earlier this year by Stefan Schoeche, Senior Metrology Engineer at IBM Research and recently at the Strategic Materials Conference in the US by our own Sarah Okada, Product Marketing Director in the Materials Metrology Division. “It was about 18 years ago when I got a phone call from a headhunter who said she had an accountant position in a small company with good social benefits, opportunities for growth, and business trips. I was curious and that is how I got to work here. When I started working as an accountant - there were only three women in the office. Back then and even though we were a small team, we had team-building activities, which I really enjoyed. Since it was a small company, I was in charge of various responsibilities, which made the work very interesting. During my first 10 years, I mainly focused on general accounting, becoming more professional and deepening my skills and knowledge in my area of expertise. and then gradually the team grew, and work become more structured. Although we have experienced rapid growth in recent years, the one thing that has not changed over the years is the quality of people - many great people have joined our team! The annual team-building event is the most fun activity our HR team organizes for us. It’s always different and unique - it could be mountain climbing, snowboarding, cycling ,snorkeling ,treetop adventure or kayaking! These activities all new challenges to me but feel fun and learn a lot at the end and allow team members to get to know each other better, and I think we even work better together afterward. If I hadn’t joined Nova, I wouldn’t have known I could climb Jade Mountain, the highest mountain in Taiwan, 3,000 meters above sea level! On a personal note, a few years back my husband was sick, and I received so much support from the management and the HR team, for which I am truly grateful. So yes, Nova has introduced me to new skills and abilities on a personal and professional level. And has also supported me when I needed it most. "I normally work in the laboratory, where it is hard to tell what my colleagues outside are working on. So, when my direct manager Christian suggested that we should collaborate and present our project at Divisional Innovation Conference as part of a company-wide event, I was surprised! I knew our project was good and innovative, but did we really have what it takes compared to other projects? I wasn’t expecting that. In our work we follow a specific protocol, and our project aims to improve that protocol and reduce costs. Since I work as a senior embedded programmer in the electrical design department, I had to learn a lot about the hardware side of our project, not just the programming part but measurements and other aspects too. This was the first time I've worked on a project at such a deep level. Since I had never presented anything before, certainly not on such a large scale - I was both proud and excited to have this opportunity. Yet, teamwork plays a significant role in our daily work. That's why we decided together that both of us would present our project. We split the tasks, prepared documentation, and then summarized and reviewed everything as a team. We practiced together for our presentation as well. We already knew the content of it, but we searched for the best words - words that would encourage people to follow us. In order to curb my excitement and anxiety before the presentation, I calmed my self down thinking: it doesn't matter what other people think, I do it for myself... I admit that I might have stumbled over a few words, even though I practiced a lot, but I’m still happy with how it went. We also received very positive feedback from everyone.
