𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗜𝗗𝗦 𝗗𝗮𝘆 : 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁, 𝗔𝗰𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 At Loretta Health, we stand with millions affected by HIV worldwide. This year’s theme, “Ending the HIV Epidemic: Equalize,” emphasizes the urgency of health equity. In Europe , men who have sex with men (MSM) remain the group most affected by HIV, accounting for a majority of new diagnoses. In Germany, approximately 3,300 new HIV cases were reported in 2023, highlighting an evolving epidemic with increasing diagnoses among heterosexual individuals and people who inject drugs. Transgender individuals also face significant HIV burdens, with global studies showing a 19.9% prevalence rate among trans-feminine individuals. HIV frequently co-occurs with other chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and mental health disorders. These co-morbidities, compounded by stigma and systemic inequities, demand a holistic approach to care. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: A person-centred strategy is essential—not only to address the virus but also to manage overall health and prevent chronic diseases. Managing HIV alongside other chronic diseases requires treating the whole person, not just the virus. By addressing social, behavioral, and physical health needs, we can reduce disparities, improve outcomes, and enhance quality of life for those most affected by HIV, particularly LGBTQIA+ and underserved communities. On this World AIDS Day, let’s honor those we’ve lost, support those living with HIV, and work together for a future where prevention and care are equitable, accessible, and personalized.
