Elimination of Violence against Women Since 1981, on the death anniversary of three women from the Dominican Republic who fought against the dictatorship in their country, global attention has been drawn to violence against women and injustices. In 1999, the United Nations adopted a resolution officially designating November 25 as the #InternationalDayfortheEliminationofViolenceagainstWomen. However, violence does not only affect political activists; women of all ages and in all places experience violence, especially behind their own doors. While many improvements have been made, setbacks continue to emerge. Change can only come through education, low-threshold support services, and raising awareness in society. Women affected must be encouraged to seek help. But most importantly, political and religious institutions must #condemnviolenceagainstwomen, and insist that perpetrators must be held accountable for their actions. This is the only way to bring about the change that we so need.

Antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) is the silent pandemic of our time, and this year’s #WorldAMRAwarenessWeek theme, set by #WHO, is #EducateAdvocateActNow. It serves as a crucial reminder that the remarkable progress made since Fleming’s discovery of penicillin could be undone if we fail to act swiftly. Over the past five years, AMR has been a central focus at Health Focus, woven into our work on #OneHealth, targeted AMR initiatives, and #PandemicPreparedness projects (e.g., in ECOWAS). It’s vital that we keep AMR high on the global health agenda. We have strong hopes for the Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership (#GARDP) to enhance access to effective treatments for drug-resistant infections, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

🌍✨ Strengthening Anesthesia to Save Mothers’ Lives ✨🌍 Managing obstetric emergencies isn’t just essential—it’s truly life-saving! 💖 Unfortunately, inadequate anesthesia during cesarean sections can increase risks for both mothers and babies. Poor pain control leads to heightened stress and shock, increasing the chance of complications like respiratory issues and uncontrolled bleeding. It can also slow emergency responses, making postoperative complications more likely. 🚨 That’s why the GIZ health program is supporting six nurses to attend advanced training in anesthesia at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre. This program will empower them with the skills they need to deliver safer, more effective anesthesia in childbirth, especially in emergencies when they return to Tanga Region! 🎓💉 Salma Kasembe, one of the students, shares: “The course is improving my knowledge and skills needed to provide safe anesthesia, manage patient pain during and after procedures, monitor patients effectively, and respond to emergencies during surgery.” 🌟 Zakaria Jairos, another sponsored student, adds: “This course has transformed me! It’s preparing me to fill critical gaps in our district, giving me the expertise to handle different types of anesthesia 🛠️, manage medications safely 💊, and respond quickly to crises 🚑. With this training, I’m gaining confidence to support mothers and babies during life’s most crucial moments. GIZ funding is a big help in our communities.” 🤱💪 Salma also highlights the importance of teamwork: “When returning to Tanga, I will emphasize multidisciplinary collaboration between surgeons, anesthesia providers, and nurses to optimize patient outcomes, reducing surgery and anesthesia-related complications.” 🌐🤝 By investing in these nurses’ training, we’re not just enhancing individual skills—we’re building stronger maternal healthcare for entire communities in Tanga. 💞👶 With improved anesthesia practices, we can dramatically increase survival rates and bring healthier outcomes to mothers and families. 👩👦💫 🌺💪 #MaternalHealth #AnesthesiaTraining #SaveMothers #RuralHealth #Empowerment #GIZ

Empowering Youth in Tanga 🌍✨ Young people in Tanga today face numerous challenges in making informed health choices, often lacking access to essential, age-appropriate information and resources. From the 23rd to the 27th of September, the GIZ Health Programme, together with its implementing partners, conducted school outreach events, reaching thousands of secondary school students in various schools across the Tanga region. 🎓📚These events are designed to educate young people on vital health topics that empower them to make informed choices. Health Focus recently completed a mission in Lualaba in the DRC, the heart of the mining region. During our visit to Kolwezi, we collaborated with our partner Khethimpilo to engage private companies, civil society and gouvernement in supporting the prevention, treatment, and follow-up care for individuals living with HIV through public-private partnerships. Lualaba is the world's leading producer of cobalt, a critical component in batteries, especially with the rising demand driven by the electrification of cars in Europe. Unfortunately, the local communities do not equally benefit from this boom.
