Creating technologies and solutions for a circular economy of rigid PU-foams in Europe.
Info
The European Union is challenged with the increasing global consumption, growing pressure on resources as well as the uncertainty of critical raw materials. Coupled with the goal to become the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050 there is an urgent need to decouple economic growth from resource use and to ensure a swift transition to circular solutions. The CIRCULAR FOAM project will develop and demonstrate all technological steps required to achieve circularity of plastics in post-consumer applications, using the example of rigid PU foams used as insulation in refrigerators and construction. The CIRCULAR FOAM consortium is composed of all actors required to close the circular value chain (process industries, manufacturing, waste management, technology providers, incl. also research partners, logistics, social scientists and economist working with public sector and citizens). The resulting systematic approach will be implemented in three pilot regions (North Rhine-Westphalia/DE, Silesia/PL and Greater Amsterdam region/NL). The results will include recommendations for further replication in Europe. The waste streams will be upcycled chemically, which means that they will be valorised to become new virgin-equivalent feedstock for the chemical industry to produce new high-performance plastics. In this way, it will become possible to replace limited fossil-based resources by the renewable waste-based ones, thus not only reducing waste, but also becoming more sustainable and making a step forward to climate neutrality. https://twitter.com/Circular_Foam

German speakers - Looking back on a recent exciting stakeholder workshop on "The future of plastics recycling - a sustainable circular system for high-performance plastics"

Last week, we were happy to learn about new results from the CIRCULAR FOAM project and reconnect with our partners! This time, we were welcomed by our partners from Science & Technology Park Euro-Centrum ltd. in Katowice City - live, work & invest, Poland, for a meeting with the project consortium. The city is currently undergoing a huge transformation and aspires to be a leader in innovation and new technologies. After a day of team workshops, we pricked our ears in the plenary session on day two, with updates regarding the development of a rigid polyurethane foam recycling system – including collection, separation and chemical recycling of polyurethane and the purification of the resulting products, but also considering the improvement of product designs for disassembly and recycling, as well as an economically and environmentally beneficial set-up of a regional implementation. The visit ended with a study tour on day 3 to a fridge sorting/ dismantling site in Bolęcin, which was very exciting and relevant. Looking forward to further updates!
