F e a t u r e d We are excited to share that the Wien Museum has been featured in Ingenieurbaukunst – Design for Construction 2025, published by Ernst & Sohn. The museum's renovation and extension, which is based on the winning design from an international competition held in 2015, includes a stunning addition made of glass and reinforced concrete that appears to "float" above the historic structure. Originally designed by #OswaldHaerdtl in 1959, the existing building is seamlessly integrated with this contemporary extension. We had the privilege of handling the structural engineering for this landmark project, which officially opened its doors in December 2023. It was realized in collaboration with #CertovArchitects and #WinklerRuckArchitekten. C i n e m a R e o p e n i n g Nearly 40 years after its debut, Pathé Cinema is breathing new life into La Géode at Paris La Villette, boasting an acoustic design by Victor PEUTZ. In collaboration with the architects from LOCI ANIMA, we brought our expertise as façade engineers. This project was supported by a skilled team, including Kephren for structural engineering, ALTO Ingénierie for HVAC, Agence 8'18'' handling lighting design, and AXIO overseeing quantity surveying. With the winter holidays upon us, now is the perfect time to visit and experience the magic of cinema. Images: ©B+G #cinema #paris #façade #completed #engineering

F i r s t P r i z e We are proud to announce that our project Café Trappisten Westmalle won the first prize at the Belgian Timber Construction Awards in the "Extensions" category. The project, designed by LAVA Architecten, features a circular, innovative wooden structure. This recognition highlights the sustainable and architectural ingenuity behind the café's expansion. The timber structure of the Café Trappisten Westmalle expansion is a standout feature, with a reciprocal design inspired by mill blades. This design allows for a large free span with minimal columns, saving material and creating an elegant aesthetic. At the heart of this structure is an oculus, a large skylight that floods the space with natural light, enhancing the overall atmosphere. C o n s t r u c t i o n P r o g r e s s The Be Green project is currently under construction in the future République district on the Île de Nantes, with completion set for 2025. This mixed-use development of housing and offices, designed by MIR ARCHITECTES and structurally engineered by B+G, prioritises low-carbon construction with a timber superstructure to minimise environmental impact. The quadrilateral plot surrounds a central garden. Lower floors are built in reinforced concrete supported by piles and stringers. Above, glulam posts and beams frame the office and residential levels. An external timber frame supports walkways and balconies, while joinery for the upper floors is predominantly wood. Through material choice and structural innovation, #BeGreen aims to set a new standard in sustainable design. #Nantes #Sustainability #Timber #lowcabron #France

A r t i c l e This year, ArchDaily, one of the world's leading online platforms for architecture and design, highlights the groundbreaking Kunsthaus Graz in their article, ‘Kunsthaus Graz: A Friendly Alien Among Historic Landmarks. ’ Designed by Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, this biomorphic masterpiece redefined contemporary architecture upon its debut in 2003 as part of #Graz's European Capital of Culture celebrations. For us, the Kunsthaus Graz represents a milestone in our history. Transforming its fluid, organic form into a structural reality posed extraordinary engineering challenges, pushing us to innovate and collaborate like never before. The result? A ‘Friendly Alien’ that seamlessly bridges historic #Graz with the future, proving how engineering can empower architecture to overcome boundaries. B u i l d i n g R e t r o f i t The future Linas Association Centre will transform a former 18th-century building in the heart of #Linas, a historic town in the Paris region. This comprehensive project covers architectural renovation, site supervision, interior fittings, furniture, and signage. The main building, damaged by fire, requires complete floor replacement and a new roof structure, preserving only the historic façades. To reduce stress on the façades and foundations, a central structural framework will support the new floors. In better condition, the outbuildings will be carefully restored, retaining much of the ground floor. The design embraces modular spaces to adapt to the evolving needs of local associations. By combining #heritage preservation with #sustainable and accessible 21st-century solutions, the project ensures flexibility, functionality, and respect for history. The result will be a vibrant, dynamic hub for community activities, blending timeless design with modern requirements. We support the team of NOVO architectures as structural engineers. #Structure #Retrofit #France #Architecture #Engineering
D i a l o g u e Klaas De Rycke, from B+G Paris, will participate in an event organised by Architecture Curating Practice, an association dedicated to architectural culture. The event will focus on Alia Bengana's comic strip “Béton, enquête en sables mouvants.” Alia Bengana will present her book series, followed by a discussion exploring the use of concrete in the construction industry, the potential of innovative materials beyond current training, and the role engineers play in shifting these practices. Themes of standards, responsibilities, and teaching will also be addressed. In this context, Klaas will join Alia in a conversation moderated by Tiphaine Abenia, professor and researcher at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. The evening will conclude with a drink and an opportunity to get “Béton, enquête en sables mouvants.” The event will take place on Tuesday, 10 December at et al., 137 Rue des Tanneurs, 1000 Brussels — a short walk from the Midi station, starting at 19:00. #comics #engineering #belgium #culture
