Aviation at #ZEITfürKlima (TimeForClimate): 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀! The panel on 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘈𝘥𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘋𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘈𝘷𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 “shed light on the key elements – efficiency gains through technical and operational innovation, transformation to 100% renewable energy carriers and complementary climate-friendly measures,” says Andreas Sizmann, Head of Future Technologies and Ecology of Aviation at #BauhausLuftfahrt. 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: 1️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗳 𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱. Due to the very long product cycles and duration of fleet renewal, it is necessary to think long-term and holistically, and to understand future scenarios for global change. 2️⃣ 𝗟𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗳 “𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀” 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗶𝗼-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱. The metaphor of “green” innovation has its origins in early bio-based technologies such as biofuels. Bauhaus Luftfahrt researched the potential of non-biogenic yet sustainable energy sources at an early stage: these include “green” hydrogen and synthetic kerosene, which is produced by capturing CO2 from the air (direct air capture) and green electricity (power-to-liquid) or by reversing combustion using concentrated sunlight (sunlight-to-liquid). 3️⃣ 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁. An important realisation is that the metric by which we need to evaluate new technologies is not just the effective carbon footprint, but the climate impact. In aviation, contrails and downstream cloud formation also contribute to global warming as non-CO2 effects, even if a “green”, 100% renewable fuel is flown. 💯 The event showed the aviation perspective of climate impact mitigation very well!
