Meet the #winners of our African Climate Innovation Challenge ACIC 2024 🚀 🏆Farmer Lifeline from #kenya 🇰🇪 Agriculture contributes around 24% to global greenhouse gas emissions and is projected to rise till in the future but at the same time, climate change as well as delayed detection of pests and diseases destroy 45% of farmers' annual yield thereby exacerbating food insecurity in Kenya. To address these issues, the start-up uses solar-powered field devices to provide real time pest detection, guidance and recommendations helping farmers mitigate #climate impacts, reduce losses and adopt #sustainable practices. Under the leadership of Esther Wanjiru, CEO FarmerLifeline, Farmer Lifeline's agri-robots have already detected more than 1.7million instances of crop pests and infestations and have also predicted more than 2.500 extreme weather events for farmers in Kenya. With the prize money, they intend to enhance their detection accuracy and reach even more farmers in Kenya. 🏆Greentech Africa from #congo Brazzaville 🇨🇬 The start-up as found a way to exploit or repurpose the invasive water hyacinth which disrupts waterways, thereby harming ecosystems across Africa. The start-up's KUKIA fibre transforms water hyacinth into eco-friendly absorbants for cleaning petroleum #pollutants and creating construction material. Divin Koueba and his team is creating #jobs for over 750 community members, 85% being #women. We congratulate both winners on the fantastic work they've done so far and wish them continued success with their future plans. Both winners take home 10.000 USD each to expand and continue to build out their great concepts all centered around #mitigating or #adapting to climate change. The #young Africans on the continent already have the ideas to tackle the climate crisis❗Our job is to highlight them and provide the resources they need to create sustainable change in their communities on their own! A big thank you to our #jury Eldad Nutakor Irene Aniteye Isaac Newton Acquah JESSY LOMBALE-BARE and Lucie Poulet who definitely didn't have an easy job but came out in full support of these innovators providing guidance and meaningful feedback. Huge thanks to the wonderful sponsors we had this year Global Resilience Partnership International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3) International Trade Centre. It's only thanks to your support that we've come this far! We're very grateful for our strong partnership with our partners Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) Start.Up Lounge Africa and look forward to much more.

New Project Alert! 📢 We are happy to announce our new and very first project in #nigeria 🇳🇬 - Transforming Methane to biodegradable plastics🤩 This project is initiated and implemented by #students from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka #methane is one of the most harmful emissions (34 times more potent than CO2 emissions) to our planet which abolutely needs to be addressed when it comes to #climatechange #mitigation. In Nigeria, Methane-containing #landfill waste gasses are produced, for example, by the biodegradation of organic substances (e.g. food waste) but also as a by-product of crude #oil extraction (flared natural gas). With more than 144 flaring sites, the #nigerdelta region in Nigeria has one of the highest gas flaring rates on the continent due to intense oil extraction and this methane emission result in immense #environmental, economic and health impacts. Six students from the University of Nigeria Nsukka will address this issue not only by avoiding these emissions through the #recycling of methane, but also by producing a valuable product (biodegradable plastics) from it. The students will work in the Niger Delta region and use bacteria to metabolize methane, producing #bioplastics. The project simultaneously prevents methane emissions from landfills as well as gas flaring and reduces the production of conventional plastics, thereby promoting a #circular economy in Nigeria and mitigating climate change. We are deeply grateful to our partner Stand Out For Environment Restoration (SOFER) Initiative and our sponsors the Cordes & Graefe Foundation and the Innovation & Zukunft Foundation. This is another example of how the African #youth can leverage its #education to create #innovative 💡solutions to the #challenges arising from the #climatecrisis through #research. We love it because we truly believe in the African #innovation for a global #impact!

New Project Alert! 📢 We are happy to announce our new and very first #project in #ethiopia 🇪🇹 - Development of Novel Multi-Stress Resistant Sorghum through Mutation Breeding🤩 This project is initiated and implemented by #students from the Addis Ababa University As one of the most important cereal crops🌾in the world, Sorghum is particularly important for #foodsecurity on the African continent. As a staple food, Sorghum millet is the second most cultivated cereal in Ethiopia after corn. However, the cultivation of this important food has become more difficult in recent years due to #climatechange. The students intend to develop new varieties of sorghum that are resistant to multiple stresses through a mutation breeding approach. By utilizing this approach, the project aims to create sorghum genotypes that can withstand various environmental stressors such as #drought and striga weed. This will ultimately contribute to the improvement of sorghum #crop productivity and resilience in challenging agricultural conditions. With this research the students can significantly reduce the risk of crop failure and thus improve agricultural productivity and food security especially in the face of the harsh climate change crisis. We are deeply grateful to our partner TaYA and our sponsors the Cordes & Graefe Foundation and the Innovation & Zukunft Foundation. This is another example of how the African #youth can leverage its #education to create #innovative 💡solutions to the #challenges arising from the #climatecrisis through #research. We love it because we truly believe in the African #innovation for a global #impact!

As an #african organization providing an African #voice on current global challenges. The Mo Ibrahim Foundation provides data and analysis to assess challenges and brings together Africa’s stakeholders to discuss potential solutions, grounded in sound #leadership and #governance The foundation surveyed respondents from 54 African countries providing insightful results: ✨ Education and Climate Change are key priorities Asked to rank key sectors in Africa by order of priority, more than half of respondents selected #education and #climatechange as top priority sectors. Almost 40% ranked #energy amongst their top 3 priority sectors. ✨ Climate Change has the largest sector financing gap In terms of those sectors with the largest financing gaps, according to more than 50% of respondents, climate change and #infrastructure are at the top of the list, followed by education and health. It's important for African countries to have their own financial agenda based in their resources to be implemented by Africans themselves. ✨ Adaptation to the Climate crisis should be prioritized When it comes to the climate crisis, 69% of respondents believe #adaptation should be the priority, closely followed by #mitigation (14%) These results clearly resonate with the work we at 3 E's 4 Africa e.V. do! Because we believe in the innovative power of the African #youth and in the impact they will have globally, we provide #funding so that through their education, they can pioneer innovative solutions to address climate change adaptation and mitigation themselves. We made it to #german TV AGAIN 😍❗ One of the core #objectives of the African Students Day 2024 we hosted at the RWTH Aachen University last week was to create #visibility! Visibility for a strong, motivated and passionate youth within the African Diaspora, who besides their #studies, vocational #training or other activities are willing to engage with one another to not only learn but also to discuss how to create #impact on their home continent. For this reason, we are incredibly grateful to the German broadcasting station WDR who gave us this opportunity to create visibility for this resourceful community. A big shout out to our beloved team member Ana Ndouop who wonderfully represented us #live at the WDR Studio in #aachen #africanstudentsday

Last Saturday we made history by hosting the very first African Students Day 🤩 which took place at the RWTH Aachen University. We had a full house of more than 100 African students and trainees from #germany #netherlands and #switzerland. With our fantastic #speakers we were able to generate insightful and engaging #discussions about #africa but most importantly we were able to #empower the young African #diaspora to further believe in themselves and #engage in creating impact on their home continent. The energy and the exchanges during the event were contagious which left most participants asking for more. One thing we can say for sure, is that the young #students and #trainees of the African #diaspora are very passionate about creating change on their home continent. It is our organisation's core belief that every African youth - on the continent or in the diaspora - has the potential and should be given the resources to make a difference. The African Students Day is a movement towards recognizing, uniting, and empowering African students in Europe so that they can create change back home. We would like to deeply thank our amazing speakers Prof. Dr. Gael Pentang Dr. Rahab Njeri Dr. Boniface Mabanza Bambu Virginie Kamche Julie Ngoya Tshidibu Naomi Akua Duelli Leah Watetu Contimi Kenfack Mouafo who created the sparks for an engaging discussion and provided a wealth of knowledge to the audience.
