Are You Growing in the Desert or Thriving in the Forest? 🌳 At Øredev Kent Beck and Beth Andres-Beck challenged us to rethink our work environments. They introduced two contrasting settings: the “desert” and the “forest.” Listen to their presentation and maybe take a moment to look at the environment your team works in? 📽️ https://lnkd.in/dGuV-9an 👀 In the desert, developers face tight deadlines, scarce resources, and limited community support—a recipe for burnout. But in the forest, teamwork, trust, and sustainable practices create a thriving ecosystem where ideas grow, collaboration is encouraged, and mistakes are stepping stones to innovation. The forest thrives on continuous testing and realistic project planning, balancing workload and encouraging mentorship. By involving customers in the development process, teams deliver real value, avoiding the pitfalls of rigid, top-down planning. It’s a place where junior and senior developers learn together, share knowledge, and pursue a shared vision of quality and innovation. Ready to build your forest? Start with small steps, like fostering open communication and shared goals. Beth and Kent’s talk reminds us: a supportive, collaborative environment isn’t just possible—it’s the future.

🌐 Are we building a digital world we can all thrive in? 🌐 Corin Ism, co-founder of the Future of Governance Agency, asked that question in the first Øredev keynote, focused on the power of technology to shape our digital and societal future. They issued a challenge to tech developers, leaders, and designers to move beyond algorithms designed only for engagement and revenue, envisioning instead a digital world that prioritizes fairness, well-being, and autonomy. Corin left us inspired to rethink our approach to building the future. This is just the beginning of the conversation! Relive the keynote 📽️ https://lnkd.in/dsUm96J5 👀 Key Takeaways: - Code as Law: In digital spaces, code becomes the rulebook. Corin emphasized the potential for developers to create environments that encourage positive behavior and community, without relying on traditional punitive measures. - Designing for Digital Well-being: Concepts like "finite scrolling" and "digital opening hours" promote healthier online habits, countering the endless engagement loop of today’s platforms. - Virtual Societies for Real Change: Digital worlds offer a blank canvas to experiment with less hierarchical, more inclusive societal structures—giving people a new way to self-identify beyond borders. - The Responsibility of Tech: Corin urged developers to embrace their role in shaping societal norms and to prioritize ethics over profit, fostering a fairer and more humane internet. #DigitalEthics #TechForGood #VirtualWorlds #WellbeingInTech #FutureOfGovernance

Want to shape one of the largest conferences in the Nordics? 👉Join our Program Committee! We are always on the lookout for new committee members, and the work to build our Program Committee for 2025 starts now. Don't hesitate : Email us today! 💌 maisa@oredev.org Together with another member you would be responsible for building a strong, coherent, balanced track; such as data, web or security. The two of you can bounce ideas together, be each other’s second opinion and inspire one another. Building a track comprises 2 major tasks: 1. Invite speakers of your choice: Get outstanding speakers you believe everyone should see live at Øredev. The sky is the limit; it could be a person who developed your favourite tool or framework, or maybe someone you’ve heard give a great talk before. 2. Find excellence from the Call for Papers: We get +650 applications! This task consists of sifting through the applications for your track, looking for emerging speakers. You’ll find fresh perspectives and a chance to support new talent. Naturally, you get a free ticket to the entire conference. You are also an integral part of the side events with the speakers during Øredev week: a dip in the sea & dinner at Kallbadhuset and the speaker’s dinner at Malmö City Hall! If this sounds tempting, we would love to hear from you! Email us today! 💌 maisa@oredev.org
