  • The Startup Manual 1.01 for Media Relations When starting a new business, your focus will most probably be on development and building your product or service which is attractive to customers – solving an unmet need and providing value. Engaging in speaking to the press can seem daunting but is absolutely manageable with a few strategic steps. Working with media relations can significantly boost your visibility and credibility. Here’s a roadmap to help you get started: 1.    Define Your Story Identify what makes your startup unique Keep in mind that which is interesting to different target groups and strive to understand the perspective of others. Authenticity and honesty are crucial in establishing trust. 2.    Start Building Your Media List Identify journalists, bloggers, and influencers who cover your industry or niche. Make use of media monitoring to research previously published articles in your sector to help you build your media list. Making a “wish-list” of media and journalists whom you would like to know about your business.  3.    Prepare for engaging the media Create a “Press Room” on your website with essential information, such as your company background, key team members, high-quality images, and contact details. 4.    Start with Press Releases and Pitches Write basic press release announcing your launch, a new product, a significant partnership, notable board members, or any other newsworthy event. Make sure it’s concise, and focused on the audience’s benefits. Accept a fact of life. Initially, you may not get the attention you think you deserve. Be patient – building credibility takes time.  5.    Leverage Owned Media Channels Use your website, blog, and social media channels to tell your story and build a presence. Consistent and valuable content can help position you as an authority in your field, making it easier for the media to recognize you. 8.    Monitor and Measure Your Efforts Use media monitoring tools to track coverage and measure the effectiveness of your PR efforts. This will help you understand what’s interesting to others. 9.    Be Persistent but Respectful If a journalist doesn’t respond, don’t be discouraged. Follow up politely. Remember, they receive large volumes of pitches and press releases daily. If they’re not interested, move on and try others. It may mean they are not interested today – but tomorrow is a new day. Effective media relations is an ongoing process that requires patience, persistence, and adaptability. Media relations is a valuable tool to support your startup's growth, visibility and brand. Everything takes longer than you think – that’s why it’s good to start now. “Great disruption occurs in a company when people like to make meaning rather than money.” – Guy Kawasaki

Are you an NGO looking for money? Start by not looking for money! For NGOs (or similar organizations), attracting funds typically means pursuing grants and donations. However, to secure funding, you need to establish a strong brand, trust, and credibility. You need to show that your organization delivers on its promises and "walks the talk". Start early. Engage with the press to refine your messaging and ensure accountability. Journalists can be a powerful ally—they're tough to impress, so their endorsement can significantly boost your credibility and help attract the attention you need. Here are some practical tips to integrate media relations into your strategy: 1. Craft a Compelling Story: Develop a narrative that highlights your uniqueness, value proposition, and potential impact. Ensure it resonates with journalists and potential donors. Stay grounded in reality—avoid wishful thinking. 2. Build Relationships with journalists: Identify and engage with journalists who might be interested in your work. Follow them on social media, interact with their content, and build connections before you need coverage. Personalized pitches are more likely to succeed. 3. Create a Digital Press Room: Include your organization's background, key milestones, team bios, scope of activities, press releases, high-resolution images, and relevant data or reports. Always include contact information. 4. Craft Press Releases: Send out press releases for significant milestones, such as new projects, funding, partnerships, or awards. Ensure your releases are concise, newsworthy, and tailored to your target journalists. 5. Leverage Thought Leadership: Position yourself and your team as thought leaders by contributing guest articles, speaking at events, or participating in panel discussions. Reflect this in your press materials. 6. Set Up Media Monitoring: Use media monitoring tools to track mentions of your NGO and stay informed about news in your areas of interest. This allows you to respond quickly to opportunities. 7. Be Responsive and Accessible: Respond promptly to media inquiries and ensure your contact information is easy to find on your website and in your press room. Remember, journalists often work on tight deadlines. 8. Engage on Social Media: Maintain an active social media presence. Share updates, interact with followers, and participate in relevant conversations to increase your visibility. 9. Measure and Adjust: Monitor your press coverage and use the insights to refine your media strategy and messaging over time. By consistently engaging with the media and following these steps, you can raise your profile, supporting your efforts in obtaining funding for your NGO. P.S. This approach is equally effective for organizations that aren't NGOs but are still seeking funding.
