  • At Gjenge, we believe that empowering women is a cornerstone for driving sustainable, community-led development. That’s why last week we were thrilled to host Women's Earth Alliance, an organization that shares our passion for creating grassroots impact. Among other things, we discussed the potential to create ripple effects that uplift communities, address critical environmental challenges, and empower women as agents of change. How does Gjenge hope to achieve this: Plastic Circular Economy Leadership – Women-led initiatives can transform waste into value, and uplift communities and generate income. Capacity Building – We aim to provide skill development, training, and mentorship for grassroots women, enabling them to lead businesses and advance their communities. Innovative Climate Action – Expand climate-smart solutions that address waste, enhance resilience, and create opportunities for women in underserved regions.

Nzambi Matee is the embodiment of creative and resilient individuals. The 31-year-old entrepreneur is a mechanical engineer by profession, an environmentalist, and a hardware designer. Matee, a sustainability enthusiast, has earned admiration for building an enterprise, Gjenge Makers Limited, which turns plastic waste into bricks. Through her business, she has not only managed to clean the environment but also created jobs as well. #Top100Kenyans2024

  • Did you follow the recently concluded COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan? Here are some discussion points related to waste and global waste management challenges: 🔹 Plastic Waste Management: Discussions around reducing plastic pollution through circular economy models. Delegates explored partnerships to minimize single-use plastics and strengthen global recycling networks. 🔹 Methane Reduction Pledge: Nations committed to cutting methane emissions from organic waste, advancing towards the 1.5°C climate goal. 🔹 Finance and Innovation: A $300 billion annual climate finance goal was set, focusing on adaptation and waste reduction strategies in developing nations by 2035. These steps were an attempt towards the urgent need for sustainable systems and international collaboration to tackle waste's environmental impact. Do you think the COP was successful in advancing from the previous one? 🌱

  • It was wonderful participating in this investor readiness bootcamp. Important lessons on how to communicate finances, impact, and how to brand the business attractively really came through in the bootcamp. We are grateful for the opportunity to participate.

KCIC, under the #SWIFT Program, recently concluded a one week Investor Readiness Bootcamp aimed at equipping entrepreneurs in the #wastemanagement sector with the tools and knowledge necessary to navigate the investment landscape. The bootcamp, which brought together 56 enterprises, provided an in-depth focus on critical areas such as: ✅ Financial Management & Forecasting ✅ Investment Packaging & Structuring ✅ Financial Modeling ✅ Circular Economy Principles (in partnership with Circular Innovation Hub) ✅ Gender Mainstreaming, Safeguarding & Decent Jobs Creation ✅ Brand Image & Positioning The sessions were facilitated by KCIC’s team of experts and industry consultants, including Circular Innovation Hub, ensuring that participants received comprehensive and actionable insights for scaling their businesses. The highlight of the Bootcamp was an elevator pitch competition, where 22 enterprises had the opportunity to present their investment cases before a panel of five judges. In a highly competitive session, Maqor Brands Africa Limited emerged as the winner, taking home Ksh. 250,000 grant. Mega Gas Alternative Energy was awarded Ksh. 150,000 as the first runner-up, while Philmafaith General Enterprise Ltd received Ksh. 100,000 in third position. Judge Damaris Ochieng praised the participants, stating, “The confidence in delivery and the passion displayed by the entrepreneurs were truly commendable. It’s evident they have a deep understanding of their businesses.” Felix Mwaki, KCIC’s Director of Enterprise Support and Investment, highlighted the importance of catalyzing opportunities in the waste management sector to attract investors. “We need many more catalyzers in this sector to open up opportunities for investors. At KCIC, we are deepening our engagement in financing and transitioning to more impact investment,” he remarked. The Investor Readiness Bootcamp is a testament to KCIC’s commitment to building resilient, investor-ready enterprises capable of driving substantial economic, social, and environmental impact. • Since today is Thursday, let's throw it back. The RMB Think Summit 2024, held on October 10 at the Landmark Conference Centre in Lagos, Nigeria, marked the first of its kind in West Africa. Organized by Rand Merchant Bank (RMB), the event revolved around the theme "Future Reimagined," fostering discussions on finance, technology, sustainability, and societal transformation specifically for the African context. Speakers included notable figures like Bayo Ajayi, CEO of RMB Nigeria and Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani. The summit also highlighted sustainability, with Nzambi Matee, our founder, demonstrating innovative solutions for African housing by recycling plastic waste into building materials. In addition, cultural insights were provided by prominent figures like Prof. Wole Soyinka, who discussed Africa’s potential for intellectual leadership and actor John Boyega who urged the diaspora to take pride in their heritage and tell their own stories. Today we'll bring you bite-sized content on Nzambi's ideas and thoughts shared in this summit. But first, watch her presentation here: https://lnkd.in/eVxBy2us
