𝟏𝟎𝟐 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟑𝟎: 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞? The global fashion industry's textile consumption is projected to surge from 62 million tonnes annually to 102 million tonnes by 2030—a staggering 40 million tonnes increase in just six years. This rapid growth underscores the urgent need for sustainable practices across the fashion value chain. Currently, 87% of textiles end up in landfills or incinerators, while less than 1% are recycled into new garments. Such wastefulness contributes to 10% of global carbon emissions and 20% of water waste. With the fashion industry also responsible for 35% of primary microplastic pollution, adopting recycling programs, eco-friendly materials, and consumer education is critical. Addressing this massive expansion responsibly is essential to mitigating the environmental footprint of global textile use. 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡'𝐬 𝐑𝐌𝐆 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐧-𝐂𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝. Bangladesh’s ready-made garments (RMG) industry is witnessing a rising demand for non-cotton apparel, which has surged by 78% in its share of total fiber production over the past five years. With non-cotton apparel representing 75% of global exports, Bangladesh must diversify its export portfolio to stay competitive against major exporters like China, Vietnam, and Italy. Protective textiles, a growing segment within technical textiles, offer a promising path for diversification. Used in industries such as oil and gas, civil defense, and military, protective apparel meets the demand for functional clothing with life-saving properties. By investing in technology and raw material sourcing, Bangladesh’s RMG sector could capture a share of this high-growth, non-cotton market and achieve sustainable expansion. According to a joint study by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and Swedish retailer H&M, establishing clear regulatory frameworks could incentivize the informal post-industrial textile waste (Jhut) economy, enhancing recycling capabilities and productivity. Currently, the country recycles only 18,000 to 24,000 tonnes of apparel-grade yarns, representing just 5-7% of the annual 330,000 to 500,000 tonnes of cotton waste generated.
