Businesses with over Tk50 lakh annual sales likely to face 15% VAT : - VAT rate hike from 4% to 15% for businesses making over Tk50 lac sales. - Businesses with annual turnover above Tk30 lac now need BIN. Govt to increase VAT on restaurants, hotels, clothing : - The truncated VAT rates on 43 types of goods & services will be abolished, & a standard rate of 15% will be applied. - NBR is planning to increase VAT on restaurants from 5% to 7.5%. Cenbank to set dollar reference rate, fix spread : - After seven months of introducing a crawling peg system, the BB is set to increase the mid-rate by 1.5-2% from Tk117 per US dollar, in response to recent market trends. - The central bank will closely monitor compliance with these guidelines & establish a complaint cell led by senior officials. NBR to cut tax exemptions once economy improves: chairman : - The govt. will rationalise tax exemptions once the country's economic situation improves to some extent, according to NBR. - Despite the revenue board allowing significant exemptions at the import stage, the prices of essential commodities have not yet reduced to expected levels. BB to keep policy rates unchanged as panel suggests shift from crawling peg : - A high-powered panel of the BB decided to maintain the policy rate at 10 percent until the inflation comes down to a desired level & also spoke about moving away from the crawling peg & letting market forces determine the US dollar exchange rate. - It was said that the step would serve as a transitional arrangement, paving the way toward a fully flexible exchange-rate schedule in the future while slowing the erosion of the country's dollar reserves.
