The trolleybus "La Verde" has taken its first steps in Pescara, Italy. On Thursday, February 22, the new trolleybus line started its technical tests. "La Verde", 8 km long and with 25 stops, will connect the Pescara railway station with the large hotels of Montesilvano.
The trolleybus fleet currently consists of six Exquicity 18 T large-capacity articulated trolleybuses built by Van Hool, with electrical and traction parts supplied by Kiepe Electric. Vehicles with a futuristic design are already present in Italy in Parma, where they have been in service since 2013, and in Rimini, on Costa's Rapid Transport, while abroad we find them in Geneva and Montreux in Switzerland and in Linz, Austria, in the 24-meter version.
Comfort for passengers and drivers is complemented by high acceleration and deceleration performance and the possibility of progressive charging, according to the #IMC® (In Motion Charging) technology provided by Kiepe Electric. The new lithium batteries allow the trolleybus to travel autonomously with passengers on board and without speed restrictions or renunciation of on-board services.
The technical tests on infrastructure and vehicles will continue for 9 weeks, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. In the weeks of testing, the expected speed of the vehicles will be 20 km/h; the activation of the traffic light systems at the road intersections with Via Ruggiero Settimo, Via Luigi Cadorna, Via Cavour, Via del Milite Ignoto, Via Leopoldo Muzii and Via Giovanni Bovio was also authorised. The results of the first days of testing are certainly positive, both in terms of vehicles and infrastructure.
The Exquicity are equipped with four doors for boarding and disembarking passengers and can accommodate up to 134 people. Both the driver's seat and the passenger environment are air-conditioned; There is video surveillance, the floor is lowered, and there are spaces for the disabled. The livery of the vehicles is white, with green decorations and logo.
When fully operational, the line will be covered in 20-25 minutes, with a trolleybus passing every 10 minutes on average. The route develops for the most part on its own site on the old route of the Adriatic railway, while for about a kilometer, at both terminuses, the trolleybus will advance in autonomous motion. An extension to Pescara Tribunale, where the trolleybus charging station should be built, is already planned.
