As we reflect on 2024, the #ChiesiFoundation is proud to share our impactful initiatives aimed at improving #healthcare in the Global South through innovation and collaboration. This year, we revised and piloted the #NESTmodel in Benin, Burkina Faso, and Togo to reduce newborn mortality and morbidity. We also advanced the second phase of this model in Burundi, enhanced training and infrastructure at referral hospitals, and expanded our efforts to the Ivory Coast. Our new project in Senegal, in partnership with the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (#PMNCH), and the successful second edition of the NEST Partners Meeting in Benin fostered invaluable collaborations. In #respiratoryhealth, we scaled the #GASPmodel in Guyana, renewed partnerships in Peru, and conducted our first site visit in Nepal. Our visibility at international conferences and the release of our #SocialReport underscore our dedication to collaboration and transparency. Looking ahead to 2025, we remain committed to enhancing access to quality healthcare in the #GlobalSouth. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in making a difference. Chi siamo

The Chiesi Foundation's Neonatal Essential Survival Technology Model has recently been updated and is now accessible to #healthcare professionals and academic communities, especially in Francophone African countries. Developed to address #newborn mortality and morbidity, the #NEST Model identifies barriers and implements sustainable, practical solutions. It serves as a valuable resource for translating theory into practice, with local healthcare professionals helping to create culturally appropriate approaches that boost #ownership and satisfaction. By focusing on long-term #health improvements not only for #newborns but also for mothers and families, the #NESTModel aims to reduce disparities in #mortality rates, especially during the critical first 28 days of life. Aligned with global initiatives like the UN #SustainableDevelopment Goal 3 and the Every Woman Every Child Everywhere (#EWENE), the Chiesi Foundation is dedicated to empowering healthcare professionals in French-speaking #Africa, contributing to a healthier future for mothers, babies, and their families. #Ethiopia, renowned for its rich history and diverse culture, is confronting significant socio-economic and political challenges. Civil conflicts in regions like #Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia have caused substantial damage and loss of life. Amidst these challenges, Ethiopia is committed to economic revitalization through strategic liberalization and privatization #reforms. Despite commendable strides in #healthcare, Ethiopia faces critical issues, particularly in #neonatalcare, with a neonatal mortality rate that reaches 27 deaths per 1,000 live births and #prematurity, asphyxia, and neonatal infections as primary causes. The disparity in accessing quality #health services, especially in rural areas, impedes efforts to slow this trend down. At the #ChiesiFoundation, we are determined to address these challenges through our #IMPULSE program, which aims to enhance the quality and utilization of newborn #data in sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia, and produce evidence-based solutions to improve neonatal care. By refining #dataquality and usage, we aim to drive policy changes that benefit #newborns and their families. Together, we are dedicated to making a meaningful impact and ensuring every newborn has the opportunity to #surviveandthrive. #Uganda, with its rich cultural heritage and resilient population, is navigating a complex socio-economic and political landscape. Despite challenges like regional conflicts and economic #instability, Uganda's growth is projected to reach 6% by the end of the year, thanks to favorable weather and investments in the oil sector. However, #poverty remains a pressing concern, affecting 4 out of 10 Ugandans living below the international poverty line. In #healthcare, Uganda has made progress, yet faces significant hurdles in #neonatalcare. The neonatal mortality rate is 18.4 deaths per 1,000 live births, with stark urban-rural disparities. Preterm birth remains a major cause of infant mortality, hindered by inadequate #equipment and trained staff in many hospitals. As a result, approximately 81 #newborns die daily before reaching one month, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced neonatal care. At #ChiesiFoundation, we are dedicated to tackling these pressing issues through our #IMPULSE program (Improving Quality and Use of Newborn Indicators), which seeks to advance the quality and utilization of newborn #data across sub-Saharan #Africa, including Uganda, and focuses on generating evidence-based solutions to enhance neonatal care. Together, we can make a significant impact and ensure every newborn has the chance to #surviveandthrive. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/g3HsTXnD #HealthForAll #HealthEquity #IMPULSEProgram

The Chiesi Foundation has recently launched the implementation of the #NEST (Neonatal Essential Survival Technology) Model in #IvoryCoast, with the collaboration of Medici con l'Africa Cuamm/ Doctors with Africa CUAMM. Last week, our team visited key hospitals and engaged with local #healthcare stakeholders to assess the current landscape and monitor the ongoing activities. The project aims at building #neonatalcare capacities for midwives, nurses and doctors at three healthcare facilities: Centre Hospitalier Régional (CHR) d'Abobo, Hôpital Général Privé Confessionnel Saints Coeurs de Clouetcha (HGPC); and Formation Sanitaire à Base Communautaire (FSU-COM) d’Anonkoua-Kouté. The #training program on quality essential care for small and sick newborns was developed by Doctors with Africa - CUAMM together with the National Program for Maternal and Child Health (DC-PNSME). The sessions were facilitated by Dr Rebecca Kouamé N'Guessan and Dr Georgette N'Goran Koffi from #PNSME, alongside Dr Paolo Villani (Italian Society of Neonatology) and two other Italian neonatologists. The implementation of the #NESTmodel in Ivory Coast - as well as other countries of francophone sub-Saharan #Africa - is vital in addressing the high #neonatalmortality rates. While many hospitals possess the necessary facilities, they require targeted training. The mission also featured a visit to the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire of Treichville that hosts the National Reference Center for the #KangarooCare method, and a meeting with the Deputy Head of Mission at the Italian Embassy in #Abidjan to discuss our initiatives and outline future plans. A comprehensive case study on the implementation of #KangarooCare at Ngozi Regional Hospital in #Burundi is now available. This initiative, part of the Neonatal Essential Survival Technology (#NEST) model, is focused on reducing neonatal mortality and enhancing care for premature and low birth weight newborns. Conducted by Rossana Urso this study delves into the project's impact, challenges, and achievements. It shines a spotlight on the collaboration between the Chiesi Foundation and Amahoro pro Africa, demonstrating our commitment to improving #neonatalcare in Ngozi. The outcomes are promising: despite increased neonatal admissions, the Kangaroo Care unit has maintained a stable mortality rate of around 2% for #newborns, and the average length of stay in the unit has increased, emphasizing the critical need for adequate care duration. However, the report also highlights some challenges, including financial #sustainability and the necessity to strengthen #datacollection and monitoring. It stresses the importance of enhancing the collaboration between the Ngozi Regional Hospital and local institutions and associations. Curious to dive deeper into the #NESTmodel and the #KangarooCare approach in Burundi? #Tanzania, located in East Africa, is famous for its diverse landscapes—from Mount Kilimanjaro's peaks to the Serengeti's savannahs and the Indian Ocean's shores. With a population of about 65.5 million and a 3% growth rate, 67.9% live rurally (2023). The nation achieved lower-middle-income status in 2020, primarily supported by agriculture, fishing, and tourism, yet it faces challenges like #socialinequality and #poverty. Politically stable, Tanzania is recognized for its democratic elections, but it continues to address issues such as eliminating #corruption and achieving #sustainabledevelopment. Rural Tanzania struggles with limited #healthcareaccess, with infectious diseases like #malaria and dengue severely impacting vulnerable groups. The #neonatal mortality rate is around 19.6 per 1,000 births as of 2022, with leading causes including infections, #pretermbirth complications, and birth #asphyxia. Enhancing #neonatalcare is vital for better health outcomes. The Chiesi Foundation's #IMPULSE project aims to make an impact by improving #dataquality and usage. Launched in 2021, it seeks to boost health outcomes for #newborns, especially those small and sick, through better #data collection and #analysis. This initiative is a testament to the Foundation's dedication to advancing healthcare in the #GlobalSouth.
