Product community leader + Conference Organizer at Pendo

This conversation between Jason Fried and Bob Moesta back at Product Collective's INDUSTRY: The Product Conference in 2019 of "the knowns" and "unknowns" of the work that we do as product people always will stick with me. It's only 4 minutes, but there's so much to unpack... First, if you're simply giving a product team tasks to complete in order to launch a product or feature, you're probably missing the boat. Doing so takes away all of their creativity. Because (and you're not going to want to hear this)... there's a chance that their approach to solve the problem may actually be *better* than yours. And once the work begins... there will be "known" work and "unknown" work. Which makes it impossible to know *exactly* how far along you are in the work. Because real work isn't linear. It's more like... traveling up and down on a hill. You have to get over that hump (where the unknowns live). It's worth watching the full 4 minutes here to really understand what I mean...

Our newest book TRANSFORMED is here! TRANSFORMED was written to bridge the gap between where most companies are right now and where they need to be. I have spent most of the last decade advising, teaching and coaching organizations on how to work in the product model. I have never minimized the courage it takes to solve problems in a way customers love and yet work for our businesses! Product is Hard Product Leadership is Hard And yes - Transformation is also Hard So why Transform? I hope it is to take better care of your customers. I hope it is to deliver winning solutions faster. I hope it is to make a bigger positive impact in your ecosystem. The reality is that most do it out of fear of competitive threats, frustration about their investments in technology or because they have come to see that the most valuable companies in the world work this way. Whatever your reason is for exploring this journey, Remember - It’s not easy! However, I have seen it consistently and seen it firsthand be, the right thing to do for customers, brands, and your employees.
