The best way to deal with budget constrains and at the same time keeping the quality and standard services high is challenging but can be done by the support of the library team as a whole. Cross training of staff is an essential element and involving staff in multi-tasking can help. Professional development of staff, mentoring, exploring open access resources and more colloboration among different libraries in the form of MOUs just not for inter-library but for sharing resources, professional development of training, organizing events together and consortium buying. All these can help deal with budget contraints and the same time providing exceptionally high standard and quality library services.

Resource-sharing initiatives, like interlibrary loans, consortium subscriptions for digital resources, and joint workshops, can expand offerings without increasing costs. You can also consider leveraging Open Educational Resources

Do not compromise on services. Explain to your staff and make them stay motivated and do not compromise on the service quality. There is no substitute to funding a good library because of escalating costs. Reach out to patrons, ask for members to extend their subscriptions for longer durations, bargain with service providers, etc. So, this is more of a dual strategy.

Working at an academic library where we are in a series of budget cuts over multiple years we are collaborating across campus to review priorities for the entire campus. It is heartbreaking work to sustain our student success mission and community-centered mandate in our region and beyond when the nation-wide challenge of declining enrollment is linked to funding.
