I believe the best shot comes from blending both perspectives—your expertise in makeup and my vision for the photography. Let's have an open discussion about the look we're aiming for and the mood of the shoot. We can experiment to see how the lighting and angles complement the makeup. I’m sure with both our insights, we’ll create something incredible together.

Creative differences can be tricky, but they’re often avoidable with solid communication from the start. When they do come up, I focus on respectful dialogue and set ego aside. I listen to the photographer’s vision first, then share my perspective and how I believe it complements the overall look. Finding a middle ground or making small adjustments often keeps things moving smoothly. With everyone on set watching our interactions, it’s crucial to stay aligned on our shared purpose and keep mutual respect at the forefront—because ultimately, we’re there to create something great together.

I would be open to the artists idea but also mention the end goal are all trying to achieve. We need to find synergy and common ground in order to do what’s best for the brand. Taking steps to be polite and courteous whilst also being firm on the client’s boundaries is the best solution. We could brainstorm ideas together in a board and take votes as a collective 💞

To find common ground with the makeup artist during a creative clash, start by actively listening to their perspective and explaining your vision clearly. Acknowledge their expertise and collaborate to blend both ideas. Focus on shared goals—achieving the perfect shot—rather than being fixed on individual preferences. Compromise where needed, and be open to adjustments. Keep communication respectful and solution-oriented, emphasizing that teamwork will bring out the best result. Flexibility and mutual respect can turn creative differences into an opportunity for innovation.
-
Start with a calm, respectful discussion. Acknowledge their expertise and express your vision clearly. Create a shared vision by finding elements both of you agree on. Highlighting mutual goals can bridge differences. Use visual tools like mood boards to align the look and feel. Seeing examples can help synchronize your ideas. Be willing to compromise. Incorporate some of their suggestions while ensuring your key elements remain intact. Take a few test shots with different makeup looks. Then, review them together to decide what works best for the shoot. Give positive feedback and appreciation. Acknowledging their efforts fosters a cooperative environment. A shared purpose can help mitigate conflicts.

-
You trust that they know their craft better than you do so you gracefully defer. You then ask the cameraman or DOP to look at it and let you know how it's being received then go from there.
-
The simple answer here is place the decision with the art director. They are running the show, and at times they have a vision which is different than what was discussed. Interject your thoughts, let the makeup artist do the same with the art director, who will make the final decision, since they have the final word on the assignment. If your running the show, its your vision, and design concept and you are cutting the checks, so its really your way or the highway.
