Burnout often happens when team members don’t understand their responsibilities, feel undervalued, or their contributions go unrecognised. The first step is to analyze this: acknowledge achievements, highlight each person’s importance, and maintain transparent communication. Next, directly ask the team what’s causing burnout — you might not see all the problems. And, of course, ensure regular breaks, a clear structure, and manageable milestones to keep things balanced and productive.

Agile is a mindset. Mindset of collaboration, autonomy, clarity, prioritisation, psychological safety, and outcome focussed. If you see a sign of burnout, don't blame it on agile. Have a deep dive and understand the root cause behind the burnout. Communication is the key, to having a winning team. Don't hesitate to accept your fault if you haven't planned the resources well. OODA loop can be used as a tool to keep you on track on a continual basis. As the leader you owe to your team, their well being, psychological safety, and development. Being empathetic, and appreciative can take you a long way.

As a PM, you'd also be in a situation of either inheriting a burnt-out team OR joining a burn-out team in the middle of an engagement, I've been in both situations and this is what I did. Although a good word or two would go a long way, listening more than talking helps. The solution to burnout could often be triggered by a good conversation. I'd also get them to assemble at least once a day in person (the remote team would join on camera) and talk things out; this helped the most! A well-lit space with plants helps in relaxation. Lastly, food! Take them out for a meal of their choice. To surprise them I'd often request the business stakeholder to walk uninformed in our space and individually praise the team for the efforts they put in
