Humor, while subjective, must align with the client’s brand and audience. I encourage my team to approach humor as a tool—strategically deployed to enhance content without overshadowing the message. When conflicts arise, I mediate by focusing on the project’s objectives and offering constructive feedback. Collaboration and mutual respect are key in guiding us to deliver content that balances creativity with the client’s vision.

In my opinion, is essential to make clear what the limits are and to respect each person's way of writing. Create a balance. If you make clear who the target audience is and what works and what doesn't, they will understand that there are certain types of humour that are best not to overstep. On the other hand, writers will be able to exploit their creativity if they are given the freedom to write with their own personality. In short, it is not only the responsibility of the project manager but also of the writers to take care of the humour. There should be a sense of community, where each writer matters and contributes to the project, in this way they will be more likely to follow the humour limits because they feel heard and respected

To navigate differing opinions, you need to first set clear guidelines about how much and what type of humor should be included into your writing. This is so that everyone knows how to include it into the writing. You need to then initiate an open dialogue and discussion with them. This is so that they would have the chance to speak their mind. You need to also explain to them the importance or the reason behind the inclusion of humor in your writing. This is so that they would understand why it has to be done.

I’d remind the team that humor isn’t about one person’s voice—it’s about connecting with our audience. Sometimes, stepping back and asking, “Will this land well with them?” helps shift the focus. If tensions rise, I’d bring in a little humor myself (neutral and lighthearted, of course!) to diffuse the situation and remind everyone we’re a team. Lastly, collaboration is key. Pairing team members with differing opinions can spark creative compromises and lead to fresh, unique outcomes. At the end of the day, it’s about ensuring the writing feels inclusive and true to our purpose.

Everyone has a different sense of humor. It is just like coffee. Some people want theirs black while others want it light. Find humor in the target audience's lifestyle to hit the sweet spot that the majority will love and not find offense in. You can also; Use nostalgia. Talk about the funny moments everyone experiences in childhood. And if your target audience is extremely sensitive, become the joke. See, everyone loves to laugh. But not everyone can handle being the reason for a laugh. So, play it safe. Become the joke.
-
It's important to keep the feedback constructive. Appreciate the effort and creativity behind different approaches, even if they don’t make the final cut. Then, critique the content, not the person. Phrases like, “This humour might not land with our audience because…” help keep the conversation productive. Remind the team of the purpose of the writing and the target audience. Humour can be subjective, so grounding decisions in what serves the audience best can depersonalize disagreements. Finally, find a way to incorporate elements of differing humour styles. For example, mix light-hearted wit with more universal, inclusive humour. If the team remains divided, brainstorm alternatives that achieve the same effect without controversy.
-
For example, if you're facing team conflict on humor in writing. Do this: ✅Establish clear guidelines: You could create a list of what types of humor are acceptable and what are not. ✅Encourage open dialogue : Hold a meeting where everyone can share their thoughts and feelings about humor. ✅Pomote Empathy: You can ask team members to consider how their jokes might affect others. This way, everyone can feel heard and respected, leading to a better team atmosphere.

Cultivating a culture of openness requires creating a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing both positive feedback and areas for improvement. It’s not just about addressing problems, but also about recognizing what contributes to success. Encouraging this type of dialogue helps individuals feel that their opinions are valued, and that their contributions play an important role in shaping the environment. When teams are open to discussing what works and what doesn't, it leads to continuous improvement, stronger collaboration, and a more resilient, adaptive team culture. Ultimately, this openness empowers individuals to engage more meaningfully and take ownership of the outcomes.

Navigating team dynamics over humour in writing can be a challenge, but it’s also an opportunity for growth. Humour is subjective, shaped by diverse perspectives and cultural nuances. The key lies in aligning creativity with purpose. Start by clarifying your audience and defining the tone that resonates with them. Foster open dialogue, encouraging team members to share ideas while respecting differing viewpoints. Establish clear boundaries for appropriate humour to ensure inclusivity and brand alignment. Test your content with a neutral audience to gauge its impact. Collaboration, compromise, and a shared focus on the project’s goals can turn disagreements into a creative advantage, fostering a cohesive and impactful outcome.
