🎧 “Talk to Them Nicely!” 🎧 Over the years, I’ve learned that the key to great photography is creating a vibe that makes your talent feel at ease. Here’s how I make it happen: 🔥 Curated Vibes: I ask about their favorite artists and build a playlist that feels like them. Music sets the tone and helps everyone relax. 📸 Live Preview: With my Sony setup, I stream photos to an iPad so they and their team can see progress in real-time. It’s all about transparency and building trust. 🎯 Shared Vision: I take time to explain the look and feel we’re aiming for. When they understand the vision, they bring their best energy to the shoot. Comfort + Connection = Magic in every frame. 💥

Every shoot is a collaborative effort. Handling resistance, especially as a professional female, requires a mix of empathy, assertiveness, and finesse. If a model is uncomfortable or resistant, involve them in finding a solution. Stay calm and collected, even when faced with resistance. Show enthusiasm and dedication. Your energy can be contagious and can help motivate your models to give their best.

In my experience, many models feel validated when you allow them to take the lead, shooting the ideas and poses they choose, then suggesting modifications as the shoot goes on. Most times it doesn't take much longer, with a few short seconds between each small group of exposures. If they like the final product, they generally won't care if the poses were their idea or yours. Some of the fussier clients are the best keepers, and also give great referrals.
-
For me, I let them run. If a model has particular views on how they want to pose, why stifle that? I get that it may not be what we the photographers want in that moment, but it's digital, so why not fire off a few ways. In an extreme example I might say "let's do a few poses that you like, then some that I like, and we can go from there. If a model sees that your direction is showing them in a better light (pun intended) they will start to trust your judgement. But getting a few shots that they have formulated in their heads shouldn't be a barrier to a successful photo session - it can simply be a courtesy.

I'm not sure if I can be much help in this situation. In very rare occasions, I work with models to develop concepts. In this case, they love my work coming in. And since it's my concept, and they are interested in having these concept work in their portfolio, I don't have resistance. On top of that, the final work being presented to them are way beyond their expectation. I've had models that wanted to purchase the final art work.

You have to remove some walls, I'd suggest with some humor to ease tensions. Dedicate some time to talk with the model ahead of the shoot to build an open dialogue with them. Let them be part of the creative input help too, even if at the end of the shoot there is a specific brief they will feel like a contributor to the creative process and will have more confidence in taking direction.

Foster clear communication with the model, offering guidance and understanding, while remaining flexible to create a collaborative and successful shoot environment.

In photography, the first interaction sets the tone for the entire shoot. I’ve found that the model often looks to the photographer for validation. That’s why I start every session by offering genuine compliments—it’s the quickest way to build trust and boost their confidence. Once the shoot begins, I aim for collaboration. If a model has an idea, I’ll shoot it—even if it’s not my preference—because it helps them feel valued and creative. Afterwards, I’ll share my own suggestion as an alternative. This dynamic creates a partnership rather than a power struggle, especially on shoots without a model stylist to mediate. In my experience, this approach not only keeps the shoot on track but often leads to unexpected, creative results.
