When a coaching client resists change, it's often a sign of deep-rooted fears or uncertainties. From my perspective, the key is to foster a supportive and empathetic environment where clients feel heard and understood. By building trust, exploring their concerns, and guiding them through small, manageable steps, we can gently shift their mindset. It’s not about forcing change, but empowering them to see its benefits through real, actionable insights and emotional connections to their goals. Change becomes easier when clients feel in control and supported.

To help a resistant client embrace change, begin by validating their feelings, acknowledging the discomfort change inherently brings. Collaboratively explore the roots of their resistance, uncovering underlying fears or past negative experiences. Instead of directly confronting their resistance, use gentle questioning to help them identify the specific anxieties fueling their reluctance. Co-create a structured plan, breaking down large changes into small, manageable steps. Celebrate each success, however small to build confidence and momentum. Visualization techniques and positive self-talk reinforce a belief in their ability to adapt and shift focus from fighting change to viewing it as an opportunity for growth and learning,

El cerebro humano se resiste al cambio porque demanda mucha energía, ya que está diseñado para ser eficiente. Además, nuestras creencias suelen estar tan arraigadas que las percibimos como parte de nuestra identidad, lo que hace que cuestionarlas sea amenazante. Por ello, cambiar implica dos retos: superar el esfuerzo energético y estar dispuesto a reevaluar creencias que pueden estar limitando nuestro avance. Para afrontarlo, es clave que el coachee entienda esta resistencia como algo natural y trabaje en cuestionar creencias, conectando este proceso con su propósito. Así logrará actuar con mayor libertad y coherencia hacia sus metas.

Resistance and fear of change is natural so: 1. I would explain is normal to feel resistance to lower the walls. 2. Deeper understand where this resistance comes from. The reasons behind it. 3. Use the 5 why mechanism until the excuses have no more explanations and resistance starts to give in. 4. Design a “only for today” plan where your break change into smaller steps that do not feel so overwhelming. 5. Schedule check-ins for accountability.

As a coach, I ask questions like, What’s making you hesitant? What’s the worst that could happen? What’s the best that could happen if you embrace this change? How can you shift your perspective on this situation? By helping them explore their thoughts and feelings, I aim to uncover underlying concerns and highlight opportunities they might be overlooking. I also ask, What small step could you take today to move forward? The goal is to reframe change as an opportunity rather than a challenge, helping them see their own potential and build confidence along the way.

Reaffirm the Why: Revisit their goals & the reasons they identified for embracing change, connecting it to their bigger picture. 3. Break Down the Change: Divide the larger change into small, manageable actions, allowing them to build confidence with each step. 4. Highlight Progress: Reflect on past successes where they overcame similar challenges, reinforcing their ability to adapt. 5. Offer Support: Create a clear action plan & reassure them that you’re available for guidance as they navigate this process. 6. Celebrate Milestones: Recognize even small wins to boost motivation & momentum.
