📢 New article on the HIGFLY website!! "Pioneering Biofuel Production: Transforming Biomass into Sustainable Aviation Fuel". The HIGFLY project is advancing the production of sustainable aviation fuels by innovating processes to convert lignocellulosic biomass-derived intermediates into jet fuel. This research is pivotal in achieving the EU’s sustainability and carbon reduction goals in aviation. Two Primary Routes to Jet Fuel Production: 1) Furfural-Acetone Cross-Condensation: 🍃 Combines furfural and acetone through liquid-phase condensation, followed by mild hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). 🍃Achieved an 88% carbon yield with the final product composed of 52% linear alkanes. 🍃Challenges included catalyst deactivation and the necessity for intermediate product distillation to meet aviation fuel standards. 2) Cyclopentanone (CPO) Self-Condensation: 🍃Involves gas-phase condensation of CPO followed by HDO, producing a hydrocarbon mixture rich in bi- and tri-cyclic components. 🍃Optimised using a specific catalyst at high temperatures, achieving a mass yield of 99.6% with minimal carbon loss. 🍃Final products demonstrated high carbon and hydrogen content with low oxygen impurities. Catalyst Development and Optimisation: 🍃Assessed solid catalysts for their activity and selectivity in batch and continuous flow conditions. 🍃Identified the effects of calcination and regeneration techniques on catalyst longevity. 🍃Explored hydrogen recycling and partial hydrogenation to improve sustainability. Future Applications: 🍃HIGFLY’s methodologies not only enhance the viability of bio-based aviation fuels but also provide pathways for scaling the production of bio-based chemicals. The findings support industrial adoption, offering insights into catalyst performance, process optimization, and the integration of renewable feedstocks. 📢 New article on the HIGFLY website!! "Optimising Aqueous Phase Reforming for Sustainable Hydrogen Production from Aqueous Side Streams". Johnson Matthey’s research on aqueous phase reforming (APR) explores the conversion of light oxygenates in waste aqueous side streams into sustainable hydrogen (H₂), offering a promising route for valorising biorefinery by-products. Catalyst development focused on optimising performance for simple and complex feedstocks, with specific catalysts on inorganic oxides or carbon demonstrating high hydrogen selectivity. A Design of Experiments (DOE) approach refined reaction conditions and catalyst properties, and introducing a pre-hydrogenation step significantly improved hydrogen yields for challenging compounds like furanics and uronic acids. Testing real C5 biorefinery side streams validated this dual-catalyst approach, integrating pre-hydrogenation and APR to enhance efficiency while minimizing CO₂ emissions. The study highlights APR’s potential in sustainable biofuel and biochemical production, paving the way for industrial applications of hydrogen recovery from biorefinery waste streams. 📢 New article on the HIGFLY website!! "Sustainability Assessment of the HIGFLY Process: Advancing Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production." The HIGFLY project is advancing #sustainableaviationfuel (SAF) production by evaluating its processes' #environmental, #economic, and #socialimpacts through comprehensive assessments. Using life cycle assessment (#LCA), it identifies areas like energy efficiency and solvent use as key drivers of environmental performance, revealing significant #greenhousegas (GHG) savings in certain scenarios. Economic analysis using #lifecyclecosting (LCC) pinpoints cost drivers, such as C5 sugars and CAPEX, while exploring cost reductions through process optimisation and favourable market conditions. Social life cycle assessment (#sLCA) identifies risks, especially in chemical and hydrogen sourcing, but also highlights benefits like #jobcreation and #ruraldevelopment. These assessments collectively demonstrate the potential of HIGFLY technologies to contribute to #climategoals, economic competitiveness, and #socialsustainability, offering actionable insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders.
