🚀 Last November, Ona, the autonomous delivery robot, was tested in Barcelona’s El Born neighborhood as part of the BotNet project, developed in collaboration with Vaive Logistics, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya and IRI - Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial, CSIC-UPC and funded by Fundación ”la Caixa” and Barcelona City Council. 📦 This pilot offered a real-world challenge, with pedestrian-filled spaces, narrow streets, and inconsistent GPS signals, ideal for refining Ona’s navigation model and testing its ability to deliver parcels safely and efficiently in superblock areas. 📝 In addition to the technical test, it was also the perfect opportunity to gather feedback from residents, tourists, and local businesses through surveys, helping improve Ona’s software interface and overall user experience. The enthusiastic response from the public and media showcased growing support for autonomous delivery technologies and their potential to revolutionize urban logistics. 🌍 Through Vaive Logistics, our spin-off, we will keep working to achieve for smarter, greener, and more inclusive last-mile delivery solutions. And special thanks to the team at EDAG Group, whose contributions have been key to reaching this point in the project!

⬅️ Last week, CARNET joined the FORGING consortium’s co-creation workshops, collaborating with European experts to shape the future of #DigitalTwin and #HumanMachineInteraction Technologies. In this session, we presented key outcomes from two of our digital twins key use cases in #mobility: Metropolis & Ona. 🚛 #Metropolis: In Metropolis, Digital Twins were developed to optimize urban freight transport through traffic simulations and AI algorithms, improving the management of loading and unloading zones. Additionally, they enhanced passenger counting and data integration at intermodal hubs. 🤖 #Ona: As part of the BotNet project, our autonomous delivery robot Ona was tested in Barcelona’s historic center. Using LiDAR, a 3.5 ha area with over 150 shops was mapped to create a digital twin, now used to test deployment scenarios and reduce development time and costs (as you will see in the video down below!📼). 💪 During the workshop, we also shared insights alongside Catalan innovation leaders like i2CAT, Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) - Vall d'Hebron Institut de Recerca, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, showcasing the strength of our local ecosystem on a European environment.

🚏For how long do you usually wait for the bus to arrive? Do you think this could be improved? 🚌 Addressing digitalization in public transport will undoubtedly enhance the service provided to users by helping manage peak hours and avoid delays. One of the biggest challenges is crowd congestion, especially at bus stops, where there’s currently limited insight into passenger activity. 📹 CARNET, in collaboration with Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, is working on a project to tackle this gap by equipping bus stops with depth cameras. These sensors provide anonymized data to monitor waiting passengers, their waiting times, and bus arrival schedules, offering new insights to optimize public transport services. 🤝 This initiative highlights the strong partnership between CARNET and Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), as we keep working together to bring innovative solutions to urban mobility. 📖 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dAtySaWR

🌧️ The rain wasn’t strong enough to stop us! Yesterday was the inauguration of the urban elements for #ELDERS, marking the end of one of our most heartwarming projects of 2024. This project aimed to encourage active living and self-sufficiency among the elderly population through the installation of these elements, promoting physical and mental well-being. 🌟 Designed by elders, for elders, these urban elements—now installed in El Maset and La Beguda Alta—are the result of months of collaboration. Seeing their faces as they saw, tested, and explored the elements was a beautiful reminder of how important participatory design is. Is there a better way to satisfy the needs of the population we aim our projects to? 💛 💪 At CARNET, we were honored to coordinate this project, leading the citizen engagement and project management tasks. The project was done in collaboration with Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia and Masquefa, co-funded by EIT Community New European Bauhaus. Through our collaboration, we’ve built more than just urban elements. We’re building better communities without leaving anyone behind.

📚 The European Commission recently published the report The Future of European Competitiveness, authored by Mario Draghi, which highlights the need to invest in science and universities to enhance European competitiveness. We have discussed this document before and even hosted a session with our partners to delve into its main takeaways. 🧪 This week, Daniel Crespo Artiaga published an article (accessible below ⬇ in Catalan) where he states: “Scientists don’t ask who will lead the response to an imminent emergency; instead, we are the precision system that provides a solid foundation, enabling decision-makers to make the best possible choices in each situation.” And that is exactly the reason why we exist. Our mission is to ensure that science remains the answer, enabling us to provide the expertise necessary to tackle complex problems and guide decision-makers. 🚍🌐 This resonates especially strongly with us this week, as we presented the #CIIMAUP4 initiative at the Global Mobility Call Congress. This initiative unites around 600 researchers from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, and Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). We also showcased our #BotNet pilot, which has garnered significant attention from multiple media outlets over the past few days. 📰 🚀🤝 If science doesn’t provide a solid foundation for our administrations, we risk losing the ability to advance as a society. ➡ Link to the article: https://lnkd.in/dGnV86pK
