The VC who became a founder: from backing 100+ startups to start and run my own venture.
Drawing from my decade in venture investing, I've learned that preparing for disruption means becoming the disruption. By harnessing AI-powered due diligence and pattern recognition across thousands of successful exits, we can spot emerging trends before they become obvious. The future of VC isn't just about having smart money—it's about having intelligent systems that can process vast amounts of data to identify tomorrow's winners today. Traditional gut-feel investing is being replaced by data-driven insights that cut through market noise and reveal true potential.

Diversification is generally most people's answer for this question. But I'd argue it's a combination of deep expertise, to understand how the market could move away from you (and how to navigate it) but also an understanding that a conservative capital structure and an efficient growth model (not relying on an ever growing burn) lets you control your own destiny.

To prepare for market disruptions, venture capital firms often adopt strategies focused on resilience and adaptability. A live example of such preparedness can be seen with Sequoia Capital's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sequoia Capital's "Black Swan" Memo In early 2020, as the pandemic emerged, Sequoia Capital issued a memo titled "Coronavirus: The Black Swan of 2020" to its portfolio companies. This proactive approach highlighted their readiness for disruptions and offered clear steps to navigate uncertainty.

There will always be market disruptions. However, focus on what is essential. Items which we can not live without or which solve a significant problem. Look at new regulations (the solar, EV, charging, and battery markets are booming). Loyal VC is a worldwide fund, showing location as being diverse. We look at the numbers for health, AI, Fintech, and other companies regularly. Our thesis is not based on type of company -> which again, makes us pretty diverse.

Diversify Investments: Spread capital across sectors, stages, and geographies to reduce risk concentration. Stress Test Portfolios: Model various disruption scenarios to gauge portfolio resilience. Prioritize Cash Flow: Back startups with strong cash management and low burn rates. Forge Alliances: Collaborate with investors and industry experts for shared insights and co-investments. Focus on Resilient Innovations: Invest in startups addressing critical disruptions like climate tech and supply chain automation.

Never put your eggs in just one basket. It’s all about staying flexible and prepared. I spread my investments across different areas, maintain strong industry connections, and stay alert to new trends. When the market shifts, be ready to pivot—nothing’s perfect, but thinking ahead and keeping options open really helps.

I respectfully disagree with the perspective provided on this topic. In my view, the cornerstone of a successful VC strategy over the past decade has been first-hand accessibility to data and real-time market trends. This has become especially critical in navigating and capitalizing on market disruptions. The ability to leverage data-driven insights allows VCs to identify emerging opportunities early, make informed decisions, and adapt swiftly to changing market dynamics. In an era defined by rapid innovation and unpredictability, staying ahead requires a deep understanding of trends as they unfold—not just through analysis, but through direct access to actionable information.

As a VC, my primary objectives are to support founders and protect investor capital. For founders, I’d review my portfolio and potential near term scenario risks (anything from war to inflation to natural disasters) for each company and share my perspectives with the founders. For investors, my fiduciary duty is to them. Optionality and risk management are critical to this. I’d review my playbook, as I do monthly, and ensure I’m following each and every step to protect investor capital
