I worked with one of the best program managers I've ever met, who had a CIO tell them they wanted a project to update the email and user id for 800 applications across 20k users, and it needed done in 2 months. PM said sure, in fact we can do it tomorrow. We'll take the entire company down. Nobody will be able to use anything. But we don't have to wait. Which opened the CIO to a conversation about how to do it right. When managing expectations, Chris Voss's line "How do you expect me to do that" helps get more reasonable expectations, and involves the other person in the process. It's not a shortcut. You need to have a clear plan with timelines, and you need to update regularly. This can help get the opportunity to do just that.

To balance client expectations and innovation, start by clearly communicating goals and timelines. Add flexibility for creative ideas without missing deadlines. Involve clients in the process to keep them engaged and excited

Balancing client expectations and keeping your project innovative? It’s like juggling flaming swords—possible, but a little tricky! The key is communication: keep clients in the loop about realistic timelines while sneaking in those creative breakthroughs. Stay organized, stay flexible, and you might just exceed expectations on both sides. Who said you can’t have your cake and eat it too? 🎯🎂

One word to rule them all: BOUNDARIES. For yourself AND for the client. Remember, we can do a million things for a project, which are all equally great. However, there is a timeline and budget that clearly marks the limit of what you can offer. Easier to be said than done when you love what you do, and you constantly think that your name goes into everything you do. But try to stay strong and think that every second that you spend on that project is a wasted opportunity to find another opportunity to start a new one that can allow you to have the resources to continue growing your vision without having to compromise your family time, your personal health, and your mental state. There is such a thing as another chance.

Great question! In my experience, the key is reframing "innovation" from big dramatic breakthroughs to small, continuous improvements that happen alongside project execution. I've found that setting up regular client touchpoints focused on incremental wins helps build trust and creates space for creative exploration. Rather than treating innovation as a separate phase, we weave it into the process through quick experiments and rapid iteration. The result? Clients stay confident in our progress while still getting breakthrough solutions. The magic happens when you make innovation part of your delivery rhythm rather than competing with it.
