Be equitable in your decision making in order to design an inclusive experience then diversity will be a result. One example of this is in the selection of speakers. First, assess past speaker line ups to identify patterns, examine the reach of your “accepting proposals” or if you’re not receiving proposals then examine your team and discuss what criteria they’re using to select speakers. Foster inclusivity through equitable processes to avoid creating barriers for who submits or is selected. If having a professional video reel or having a following on social media consider how that may be prohibitive. Same goes for compensation. Pay speakers and they’ll promote. In the end, a diverse speaker line up attracts a diverse audience.

All events should be diverse so let's start there. Having a diverse audience means the event should be built in a way that reflects who they are, their backgrounds, cultural perspectives and much more. Your goal is to best understand your audience and then build an event that takes into consideration what you have learned from studying your diverse audience. The more you know your audience, the easier it is to create activities they will engage in and appreciate at your event. P.S. knowing your audience goes beyond dietary restrictions.

To ensure an event has a wider appeal, you should start with a diverse event planning committee or group to plan these activities.
-
It is important to build a diverse extended event planning team that can provide authentic feedback on the agenda, the event activities, the meal planning, etc.
-
Offer a variety of activities that cater to different interests and demographics. Conduct pre-event surveys to understand audience preferences and ensure inclusivity in programming.

Think broader than "networking happy hour". It's concerning to me how many events put a lot of focus on alcohol when all kinds of group are "othered" by it, like: - Religions that don't allow - People seeking a healthier lifestyle - Those dealing with substance abuse issues - Those who have suffered loss from alcohol & drugs (My brother, passing in 2022) When you do the math, there are actually huge swaths of event attendees that are always trying to figure out to fit into alcohol focused festivities

Ensure activities cater to a wide range of interests and backgrounds by offering diverse session formats, such as panel discussions, workshops, and interactive experiences. Consider cultural sensitivities and preferences in your planning, and provide inclusive options, such as multi-lingual content or alternative dietary choices, to accommodate all attendees.
-
Start by holding focus groups or surveys to get feedback on the interests and preferences of your audience so that the activities at your event will appeal to a wide range of people. Make a well-rounded schedule with a range of events that appeal to various age groups, cultural backgrounds, and passions, like interactive sessions, workshops, and performances. Use inclusive strategies to ensure that everyone feels appreciated and welcomed, such as offering accessible facilities or translation services. In order to ensure that everyone's voice is heard and their requirements are satisfied, be ready to adjust and react to input throughout the event.

Survey…survey…survey! The ability to gather real-time data from your target audience is critical to designing inclusive programming. This starts with the understanding that as an individual, I only have so much insight into what resonates with others and the desire to offer an experience that appeals to a diverse group. Tools like Slack polling and quick surveys via email/social media allow you to collect a wealth of information quickly and easily. In addition to being equipped to make more inclusive decisions, the mere act of asking attendees what THEY like fosters engagement and a sense of belonging. ✊🏾

To attract a diverse audience to an event, the key is understanding everyone’s expectations and creating a balance in the activities. Conducting a preliminary survey can be an effective way to identify participants' preferences and interests. Variety is essential: interactive activities, engaging talks, and entertainment that respects cultural diversity ensure an inclusive experience. Additionally, paying attention to sensitivities and ensuring representation are crucial for success.
