Since I was the Public Information Officer, it was imperative that I develop a process for clear, joint and efficient communication. How I would prioritize competing demands and opinions in a crisis is basically the same as normal day-to-day. Have a clear vision and define the key objectives to achieve. Measure demands and ideas against those. Which have the best opportunity to achieve the desired outcomes? Do those. There is often a desire to push our own agendas. It’s imperative to communicate the goals and focus people on finding the highest value activities and decisions regardless of personal interest.

One thing i've found helpful is in a crisis, prioritizing stakeholder demands means focusing on the urgency of each need and the potential impact on overall goals. During emergencies, as a team leader for Kenya Red Cross Society back then, I usually identify the most immediate threats to people’s safety and well-being and address those needs quickly. Then, I assess which demands align with the crisis response strategy and are feasible with available resources. By weighing the consequences of each action and communicating transparently, I balance competing opinions while keeping focus on stabilizing the situation and reducing harm.
