If a location permit is revoked unexpectedly, I immediately pivot by searching nearby alternatives that offer a similar aesthetic or align with the project’s goals. For example, if the permit for a beachfront shoot is revoked, I might shift to a nearby park with water features or dunes to recreate the coastal vibe. I also communicate the situation to the client, explaining the backup plan and ensuring their priorities are still met. If time is limited, I adapt the shot list , for instance, instead of wide scenic shots, I might emphasize the model or product against a neutral backdrop, ensuring the visual impact remains strong.

With decades of experience, having your permit revoked is rare. I suggest that you plan each production carefully to avoid this type of problem. In the preproduction process check your liability insurance for the proper limits. Provide the issuing office with your plan of activity's regarding your production. Insure the permit office that you have addressed every detail involved with your production. Start with the location, parking, crew numbers and other concerns. Permits are revoked for basic reasons, which stemmed from a lack of production value. The question is what didn't you do. Not what will you do. Remember this is a business ! Take your preproduction planing seriously.

Always have a plan b. You never know if your original location is going to fall through for one reason or another. Even if that means having a second permit pulled just in case!

When faced with a sudden permit revocation, I swiftly explored alternative locations, negotiated for temporary access, and used the time to enhance my project’s concept. Adaptability saved the day and sparked fresh creative ideas.

If this ever happened to me, my first reaction would probably be, Well, this is great.... But after that initial moment of disbelief, I’d get to work. First, I’d call whoever issued the permit to figure out what went wrong—sometimes it’s just a mix-up that can be fixed quickly. If not, I always keep a couple of backup locations in mind just for situations like this. It might mean adjusting the vision a little, but you make it work. At the end of the day, shoots like this are a good reminder to stay flexible—because the unexpected is basically part of the job.

Négocier avec l’émetteur du permis une allocation temporaire tout en cherchant des alternatives. Parce qu’il faut toujours garder une bonne relation.

Losing your location permit can be a major setback. Network with other photographers and location managers to learn from their experiences and to gain insights into navigating permit process. Maintaining a professional and respectful attitude throughout the process is very crucial. By proactively addressing the situation and exploring creative situations, you can increase your chances of salvaging your photography project.

Time to pull out our creative best and remember the adage "expect to deal with the unexpected". Within the time slot, one can see what is available and adapt the creative brief according to what is available. Much can also be adapted via post shoot edits. Rescheduling is rarely an option and many people have to be aligned on schedules for a shoot. Some of the best results are achieved by spontaneous creativity. I would go for it!

If a location permit gets revoked out of the blue, the first step is to stay calm and assess the situation. I’d reach out to the authorities to understand what happened and see if it can be resolved quickly. If not, I’d start looking for alternative locations that fit the project’s needs, using my network and experience to pivot fast. Clear communication with the team and client is key—keeping everyone in the loop helps manage expectations. It’s a tough situation, but these challenges often push us to get creative and adapt. That’s where the best stories (and sometimes the best shots) come from!
