Outback Australia starts about 2 hours drive from the regional airport so constrained communication has always been part of constructing projects. Starlink has byfar made emails and reports back to Perth easier but does not assist on black out sites. I agree with the pre start meeting to establish work fronts , simmops and safety controls but don’t underestimate the power and appreciation of a crew when you go to each crew and do management interaction. The fact that you leave the office and do site buy in goes a long way with any crew.

Struggling to keep communication flowing with site workers on construction projects - you're not alone. Start by implementing clear and consistent communication channels, such as daily briefings, WhatsApp groups, or construction-specific project management tools like Procore or PlanGrid. Ensure everyone understands their roles and responsibilities through detailed task assignments and regular updates. Use visual aids like site maps and schedules to clarify plans, and always encourage an open-door policy where workers feel comfortable sharing updates or raising concerns. Regular check-ins and feedback loops can bridge gaps, and investing in communication apps ensures real-time updates on-site.

Yes, as a construction project manager, I face a number of challenges in communicating with workers. Complex hierarchical structures can lead to conflicting orders, and resistance to change makes it difficult to implement new communication technologies. Workforce diversity requires constantly adapting communication styles, and risk management requires effective communication to maintain safety. To address these challenges, we foster an organizational culture that promotes open dialogue, build multidisciplinary teams, and develop inclusive communication strategies that consider the different needs and perspectives of our employees.

Forget all the apps and stick to morning safety and coordination huddles. Keep them brief. Employees don’t want to use their phones for work and they shouldn’t be on them anyway. Walking a job site looking at a phone is dangerous.

The most effective way to maintain communication is through direct face-to-face meetings with the team before they go on-site. Using apps for communication is not ideal, as workers don't have the time to pull out their phones and use the app. They are unlikely to do so, as they are focused on their demanding tasks amidst the noise and distractions on-site. Radios can be useful for "white hats" and machine operators. Stakeholders (supervisors, superintendents, project managers, coordinators, and senior site inspectors) should visit the site more frequently to engage with the team, either as a group or one-on-one. This approach will help reduce communication challenges, as it is more direct, genuine, clear, and more human.

Always start your communication with safety talk. It brings a positive psyche to the team telling them that you want them to work safely and you are concern of their well-being. I've been with site leaders who starts the talk with the team straight about progress and what needs to be completed. Giving recognition on citing unsafe conditions and on work scope completed also are morale boosters. There are already plenty of apps or tools for communication. The challenge is to make the workers feel empowered that they can communicate with you. If you are a dismissive type of a leader, don't expect your workers to be open in communicating with you.
