In today's digital age, ensuring inclusivity in education is paramount. Distance learning has become increasingly important, offering flexibility and accessibility. However certain groups, such as students who are hospitalised or facing prolonged illnesses, face challenges in fully benefiting from these advancements due to social isolation. I'm very proud to initiate the 5G Metro project with my partners Université Côte d'Azur & Awabot thanks to the support of European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA). What a great team with Paulo Moura and Jérémie Koessler. The official launch took place at the ‘salon des maires’ in Paris on the Orange booth. 5G Metro aims to enhance #inclusivity in #education by deploying a 5G Stand Alone network infrastructure within the IMREDD campus (Mediterranean Institute of Risk, Environment and Sustainable Development), enabling the use of telepresence robots to improve the learning experience for remote students. By showcasing the capabilities of 5G technology in real-world scenarios, this project serves as a catalyst for future innovations. It will enable remote students to actively participate in classes and interact with their peers and teachers contributing to a more inclusive, immersive, and engaging remote learning environment. It will democratize the use of #telepresence and edge computing as well as mixed-reality learning content in education, promoting the adoption of these technologies within universities and supporting their digital transformation in connection with e-Health initiatives in France 🇫🇷 and in Europe 🇪🇺 And yes I talk about 5G, Edge or robots, but it isn't just another techno push project, it has been designed from the very beginning to put the people at the center. It prioritizes a human-centered approach, empowering individuals through technology. The use of fluid, real-time video communication linked with mobile telepresence robots will significantly enhance the distance learning experience for hospitalized and home care students, breaking down social isolation and fostering both academic and emotional development as the robot will not only stay in the classroom but should move in various parts of the University. It will be also a very good opportunity for us to apply the Social and Human Sciences (SHS) dimension to explore the sociological, psychological, and cultural impacts of the project, and of course to ensure that ethical standards are met for future wider use.
