China is placing immense pressure on the global #iron and #steel industries, with prices dropping to their lowest levels since 2020. Our principal analyst, Erik Hedborg, highlights how the Chinese construction sector's struggles are creating an oversupply in #steelproduction. Erik explains, “The construction sector in China is in great difficulty, which is leading to overproduction. L’aluminium est un produit indispensable dans notre quotidien, important pour l’économie du Québec et essentiel à la transition énergétique. Je suis fier de l’aluminium du Québec, produit de façon responsable avec les plus hauts standards environnementaux et l’empreinte carbone parmi les plus faibles au monde. Je supporte cette industrie de l’aluminium car je crois que les acteurs qui la composent, tant les producteurs du métal primaire que les transformateurs et les milliers de familles qui vivent de celle-ci cherchent constamment à innover et à améliorer les équipements, procédés et processus pour réduire l’impact environnemental et augmenter ainsi le bénéfice social de la production et de la transformation d’aluminium au Québec. Est-ce une industrie parfaite? Non, je n’en connais pas. Est-ce qu’elle est plus responsable qu’ailleurs? Certainement. Doit-on continuer d’être plus exigeant envers cette industrie? Soyons constructifs et non pas destructifs. Each year Europe needs about 8 million tonnes of primary aluminium, out of a total raw metal use, including recycling, of just over 13.5 million tonnes. However, the EU's domestic production of primary aluminium fell by 65% in the period 2000-2019, with a further loss of more than 50% between 2019 and 2024 due to the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine, and stands now at 950,000 tonnes. Recovery and recycling, despite their excellent performance, will not make up this deficit. We urgently need a careful assessment of this serious shortage of raw material by EU policy makers, thinking first of all about the competitiveness of downstream processors and users in the EU. Europe should aim to have less need to import primary metal, but the sad reality is that it will need more, despite the excellent recycling developments. Laissez-moi vous parler de l'aluminium, une ressource dont l'importance est cruciale. En tant que président d'une entreprise québécoise spécialisée dans les équipements industriels pour les alumineries, je reconnais la valeur cruciale de ce produit, non seulement pour l'économie du Québec, mais également pour la région du Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean. De par ses propriétés, l'aluminium joue également un rôle important dans la transition énergétique et la décarbonation de notre planète. Nous le savons, la production d’aluminium est un procédé complexe qui demande de nombreuses étapes ainsi qu'une grande quantité d’énergie. Malgré les défis persistants, nous devons continuer la quête vers une production sans-déchet et décarbonée. Je suis également soucieux d'offrir un monde meilleur à nos enfants et à toutes les générations futures. Personnellement, j'ai visité des dizaines de sites de production dans plus de 40 pays puisque STAS est présent dans environ 80% des sites de production hors chine. Aujourd’hui, je peux vous dire que suis fier des producteurs d’aluminium du Québec qui adoptent des pratiques responsables et respectueuses avec des standards qui dépassent les normes en matière de santé, sécurité et environnement.
