Labour mobility is crucial for filling skill gaps in certain industries. It can complement active education and employment policies as countries grapple with challenges posed by an ageing workforce.
Ammar is the first professional to arrive in Belgium through Displaced Talent for Europe #DT4E, a programme that unlocks employment opportunities for displaced individuals in Jordan and Lebanon who have highly marketable skills and the professional experience needed to fill the current skills shortages faced by European employers.
Funded by the European Union, DT4E is implemented in Belgium by IOM in cooperation with Talent Beyond Boundaries, Fragomen, Fedasil, and VDAB.

🔍 What is the Emirati Family Book? 🔍
If you’ve come across “Family Book required” in job descriptions or official applications in the UAE, you might wonder what it means. Known as Khulasat Al Qaid, the Emirati Family Book is a unique document exclusively for UAE nationals, acting as an official record of a family’s lineage and citizenship.
📜 The Family Book includes:
• Family members’ names and birthdates
• Marital status
• Proof of Emirati citizenship
For Emiratis, this document is essential for accessing various benefits like government services, public sector job applications, housing programs, and school enrollment. It’s a vital part of establishing citizenship status and eligibility for UAE-specific programs.
For expatriates, this may not apply, but understanding it can help when navigating UAE-based job requirements and knowing the distinctions in documentation.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has successfully concluded its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme in collaboration with Jordan’s Vocational Training Corporation (VTC). Funded by the US Department of State, this initiative aimed at formalizing vocational skills for 1,000 beneficiaries, including Jordanian and Syrian refugees, with a significant representation of women.
The programme focused on recognizing and validating prior professional experiences, assessing skills, and bridging educational gaps. It also facilitated the acquisition of occupational practice licenses, essential for employment across various economic sectors in Jordan. Implemented in several governorates, including Amman and Irbid, the programme has empowered participants by formalizing their expertise through rigorous assessments.
Qais Al-Qatamin, ILO Chief Technical Adviser, highlighted its impact: 'This programme has certified skills and supported Jordanians and Syrian refugees in obtaining work permits based on recognized expertise, significantly enhancing their livelihoods.'
The project 'Formalizing Access to the Legal Labour Market for Refugees and Host Communities in Jordan' emphasizes enhancing employment opportunities, particularly for women, and integrating Syrian refugees into the formal workforce. It underscores ILO’s commitment to promoting economic inclusion and skills development in Jordan.
Pearson Voctional Qualifications with the Ministry of Education are supporting the iniative of promoting economic inclusion and skills development in Jordan through delivery of BTEC Level 2 & 3 qualifications to all state school learners in the vocational track, supporting the development of the required skills to progress into employment and further/higher education across the kingdom.

Imagine trying to find employment as a refugee in a new country: you’ve left everything behind, including your professional network and you might not even speak the national language. While a recent LinkedIn survey of hiring managers finds that 80% of employers agree that refugees have the right job skills or experience, these individuals are often overlooked by employers who focus too heavily on a checklist of qualifications or typical backgrounds.
We want to help solve this problem. Over the last 12 months, we supported more than 12,000 refugees through a combination of upskilling programs, job training, mentoring and donating 4,600 free LinkedIn Premium subscriptions (worth $1.4 million). This success is a testament to the power of collaboration, involving 18 nonprofit organizations serving refugees around the world, our incredible employees and many of our customers.
One of those collaborations is between Upwardly Global and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. They help refugees access meaningful jobs in healthcare – and it changes lives. Let me share a story:
Vanessa went through rigorous medical training to earn her degree as a medical doctor in the mountain town of Merida, Venezuela, establishing herself as a specialist in anesthesiology. After more than a decade of building her medical career, she was forced to flee her country, ending up in New York, NY.
It took five years for Vanessa to find Upwardly Global’s Career Coaching Program, which connected her to a career coach who specialized in supporting international medical graduates. Fast forward to today, where Vanessa is working as a Senior Anesthesia Technician at NewYork-Presbyterian.
There are millions of individuals like Vanessa in the world. To mark #WorldRefugeeDay, we are unlocking a LinkedIn Learning path about skills-based hiring to help more talent acquisition professionals and hiring managers learn about this approach:

Together we can create more opportunities for qualified individuals from overlooked talent pools to contribute to the workforce.

"Canada’s #immigration system places an emphasis on education and professional experience. However, many highly skilled newcomers to Canada often end up working in precarious, low-skilled jobs and have difficulties accessing job opportunities aligned with their competencies."
Supporting Newcomer Pathways Into the Labour Market (p.40) is an important article from this edition of the Canadian Diversity magazine, published in collaboration with the Future Skills Centre - Centre des Compétences futures.
The authors, written by Shamira Madhany, managing director and deputy executive director at World Education Services, and Dr. Wendy Cukier, founder and academic director of the Diversity Institute, present the challenges and solutions for newcomers seeking employment in Canada.
