Hidden Secret: Unveiling the Mediterranean's Hidden Treasures In 2021, Archipelagos started with funding from Pure Ocean Fund to map Coralligenous reefs—rare and biodiverse underwater ecosystems—together with local fishermen and our research vessels. What we discovered were extensive, thriving reefs rich in life and mystery. The documentary Hidden Secret showcases these breathtaking discoveries and highlights how this research has continued in the years since. Thanks to the dedication of researchers and divers from France, the exploration of this unique ecosystem has expanded, paving the way for better understanding and protection of the Aegean Coralligenous reefs. This is more than a story about science—it's about collaboration, curiosity, and the future of our oceans. 📽 Happy Filmmaker Friday! Today, we get to hear from Clément Pourtal, co-director and producer of The Blue Quest Palawan, a film about the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Coral Triangle of the Philippines. This film demonstrates the importance of establishing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in some of our ocean’s most diverse areas. Clément Pourtal on what he hopes viewers take away from watching The Blue Quest Palawan: “The Blue Quest’s mission is to visit marine conservation projects all over the world in order to highlight the marine conservation issues and best solutions alongside the dedicated people and communities involved. It is already serving as a template as, having seen it, other ocean conservation actors have got in touch to enquire about us focussing on their work. We want to inform viewers that MPAs are effective for people and the planet and that to meet the 30x30 objectives we should act now and everyone, not just politicians, can help achieve our aims. Vast areas of our ocean still need protecting and with enforced protection and the involvement of local communities, in tandem with the appropriate level of financial support and transparent management, we can meet our goals.”’ To learn more about this project, visit https://lnkd.in/gCYn2aji 🎟 Click through the post to read more of our interview and don’t forget to get your SDEFF tickets at https://lnkd.in/gKCQb-kV The Blue Quest Palawan will be screened during our Evening Program on Saturday, 11/23/24 starting at 5:30pm. Lance Morgan, President of Marine Conservation Institute, will also be a panel speaker during the discussion following the film. Don’t miss out on this engaging event!

From Pledges to Protection: MCI Leads the Charge for Our Oceans Released just before COP16, the "On Track or Off Course?" report drove urgent discussions and widespread media coverage at the summit. Commissioned by the Bloomberg Philanthropies Ocean Fund and developed with Marine Conservation Institute, SkyTruth, and Campaign for Nature, the report highlights the need to shift from symbolic pledges to real action in ocean protection. The findings—only 2.8% of the world’s oceans effectively protected and 8.3% designated for protection—reveal a significant gap between commitments and actual safeguards. Based on Marine Conservation Institute’s research and published in Conservation Letters, the analysis led by Beth Pike, Director of the Marine Protection Atlas, sets a benchmark for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and stresses the need for meaningful, quality protection. Beth Pike’s words capture the urgency of the findings: “Less than 3% of marine areas are truly protected. The gap between promise and action is huge. We need real change now, not just words on paper.” These are some of the news articles that mention MCI research: • NPR: https://lnkd.in/gvwwXFGB • The Guardian: https://lnkd.in/g-d_bd-M • Down to Earth: https://lnkd.in/gizZJ2en • France24: https://lnkd.in/gfrbdc3m • Yahoo News: https://lnkd.in/gyw_tgfT As we reflect on COP16, it’s clear that Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework isn’t just about protecting more ocean—it’s about protecting it well. Marine Conservation Institute is advancing this vision by setting standards for MPAs that fulfill its essential requirements: • Effective management • Equitable governance • Inclusiveness • Conservation outcomes Instead of a rush to expand protected areas, we must ensure the most critical areas for nature receive lasting, impactful protection. #30x30 #OceanConservation #MarineProtectedAreas #COP16 #BiodiversityProtection

Beyond 30%: The Four Dimensions of Conservation Quality For 25 years, Marine Conservation Institute has championed the importance of quality protection in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Our aim is to incentivize, empower, and track MPAs that genuinely protect biodiversity and benefit communities. We prioritize: 🔹 Effective management 🔹 Equitable governance 🔹 Inclusiveness 🔹 Conservation outcomes The latest IUCN Protected Planet Report highlights that to reach the 30% target for protected areas, we need to expand rapidly. However, this expansion won't matter unless it leads to real conservation outcomes. Through our MPAtlas initiative, we assess and advocate for these standards, ensuring that MPAs are well-managed and effectively contributing to the 30x30 target. Explore how quality-driven conservation can lead us to success by 2030. https://lnkd.in/d-DbNBew #30x30 #MPAtlas #MarineConservation #MPAs

As COP16 continues, scientists are urging world leaders to keep damaging industrial activities out of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). On October 21, over 70 conservation experts—including Marine Conservation Institute’s own Dr. Sarah Hameed, Blue Parks Director, and Beth Pike, Director of our Marine Protection Atlas project—delivered an urgent letter to governments worldwide. This letter, shared by Sciaena, a Portuguese NGO, highlights critical threats to biodiversity from practices like industrial salmon farming in Chile’s protected waters and commercial trawling in EU MPAs. The signatories emphasize that simply designating MPAs is insufficient; effective enforcement is crucial to prevent ongoing damage from extractive industries. This call to action underscores the urgent need for robust policies to protect these vulnerable and indispensable ecosystems.
